Results from Final Avon League

There were some great individual performances at the final Avon League match at Yate on Sunday 11th September 2011. Mark Pratt won the under-13 boys high jump with a 1.45 metre clearance and John Brierly the senior men's 400 metre hurdles in 58.6. Thes two victories apart the only other win on the men's side came in the under-15 boys 4 x 100 metre relay where the team of Freddie Owsley, Thomas Goodman, Micah Brown and Jack Dyer clocked 50.9 seconds.
On the girls/womens side the highest finish of the day was Yemma Songu in the under-15 200 metres where she finished second in 26.5: Amy Parker, N Jones, Evie Osborn and Sam Barrett also finished second when clocking 54.2 in the under-15 girls 4 x 100 metre relay. Mention must be made of Frances Smalldridge who ran a massive PB of 3:08 to finish fourteenth in the under-13 girls 800 metres but there is a lot more to come from such a new-comer to the club.
Overall the league sections were dominated by North Somerset with Team Bath overhauling our under-17 men to win that one section. Yate won the under-17 ladies and North Somerset won the overall trophy and the remainder.

The under-13 girls were just a very few event points short in the final meet and were third for the season. The under-17 ladies were third equal with Gloucester/Severn. The under-17 men finished third.

Whilst it is good for the League to have North Somerset emerging in some strength it should now be back to Bristol & West to become better organised. An influx of team managers for all the age groups is overdue. Athlete recruitment is ongoing. It also needs support from junior and senior athletes who will find Avon League and the South West League appropriate for enjoyment and development.

We may have placed and will continue with the policy of setting a lower priority on athlete selection for the Avon League but there are event slots to fill. In all leagues the clubs that fill the team places are the ones that succeed.  Our policy enables new and improving athletes as well as established athletes to compete locally.

The Avon League should be an enjoyable club day where we are seen to be enthusiastic and supportive of athletes across the full age spectrum.

It will take more interest from existing members and in some ways the season has had the disappointment that so many members have rarely competed. So get your planning done for 2012. If you cannot make the Olympics at least turn out and enjoy participating locally. I was disappointed not to be able to get a run at an Avon League meet this year as I was officiating. I was not happy with my 100 metre time last season and would like to do better!

So think about your plans for next year. Will you be competing more often? Will you consider a support role as team manager, official, caterer, hurdle mover etc? Do let a committee member know if you are willing to consider a support role.

Avon League Results

The results of the Avon League held on Sunday 31 July 2011 at Yate Outdoor Sports Centre are available at  Downloads - Race Results and Rankings - Avon League Results. In summary it looks like an encouraging turn out. However, remembering the dominance the club used to have it is time to start filling the team slots. North Somerset AC won all sections except for the U17s.

Our aim is not necessarily to win but to encourage all members to use the league for their athletic enjoyment. Yet again the standard is very variable from people filling slots for the team to outstanding performances.

Check out the programme for 21st August and 11 September at Downloads - Track and Field Competitions - Avon League. Be there and enjoy some friendly rivalry.

Check your name is on the registered list at Downloads - Track and Field Competitions - Avon League and if not alert Hilary Nash by 6pm on the previous Friday to make sure you have a registered competitor number. Hilary can be contacted at hilarygnash@blueyonder.co.uk or on 0117 9861244  or text at 0787 5560754.

The Avon League is not an open event where athletes can turn up and expect to compete because pre registration is now being rigidly applied. The recording system is complex and substantial for a very busy programme. Do remember we are restricted, like all other clubs, to four people per event.

The above are the results of Bristol & West members at the meeting held at Yate on Sunday.   We feared the 5th was going to be unpleasant at Stoke Gifford for the NYAL meeting but Sunday at Yate confirmed the forecast fears.  Wet and getting wetter, breezy and pretty cool.   The starters were very bedraggled, cold and wet by the end of the 1,500m races. The meeting - after consulting with team managers - was called off.   Some club representatives are a little put out having made the effort to turn out teams. Others are more realistic in that officials were not fit to continue and conditions were getting hazardous for the athletes.   I think we have reached the stage of individual performances actually achieved are valid but event points will be disregarded and team positions will only be decided on the three remaining fixtures.   Thanks to our officials who braved the elements. Martin  Davies, Chris Preston, Cy Knibb, Andrea Lock and Violet Small who gave her new waterproofs a testing. I had the dubious pleasure of timekeeping from under the stand. it was worrying that Andrea ended up as Chief Track Judge and a number of clubs did not provide their requisite officials.  Unless a club has hosting responsibility it should provide a track judge, a timekeeper and a field judging team.   Despite the abandonment it was good to see a greater B&W numerical presence than last year.
