National Young Athletes Road Relays - Sunday 14th April 2013

The club took 4 teams to the National Young Athletes Road Relays at Sutton Park on Sunday 14th April 2013. Ali Hurford had 3 under-13 boy’s teams and Dave Bedwell a single under-15 boy’s team. On a blustery day Reuben Wilmshurst was the first club athlete home bringing the ‘A’ Team back in 14th place in 14:26. There was a bit of a surprise when Luke Garner-Green brought the ‘C’ Team home in 42nd place (15:59) just in front of the ‘B’ team’s Tom Snell (44th in 16:05). Such was the surprise that Anton Mills – second leg for the ‘B’ team - false started. Well done to Luke for a good run.

On leg 2 Kyle Haynes kept the ‘A’ Team in 14th place recording 14:54. Behind him Anton took the ‘B’ team up 3 places to 41st (16:28) while Robert Kiekuth dropped 5 places to 47th as he ran 20:14.

On the third and final leg Hugh Sadler equalled Reuben’s time of 14:26 as he lifted the team two places to finish twelfth overall in 43:46 and just 8 seconds off a top ten finish. It shows the progress Ali has made with her boys in the year as the under-13s finished 24th last year. The ‘B’ Team had Henry Adams gain one place as his 17:22 lap took the team to 40th in 49:55. Otis Harding-Hill had a lonely run towards the back of the field as he clocked 17:54 to bring the ‘C’ Team home in 46th place in 54:07. Special mention must be made of Robert Kiekuth who stepped in at the last minute and Stan Harding-Hill who travelled all the way to Sutton Park as travelling reserve demonstrating how far the promise of cake and ice-cream helps under-13 team management.

Dave Bedwell had a single team of 3 under-15 boys and again mention must be made of George Green whose family made a detour on the way home from a break in the North of England. Kieron Dunkley ran 13:43 to bring the team home in 24th place. Billy Cochrane ran 15:02 as he dropped to 27th and George Green just failed to pull back a place as a spirited dash for the line failed narrowly to lift the boys up to 26th as he recorded 14:50.

A big thank you to Ali and Dave for looking after their youngsters – all of whom had a great day out and gained invaluable experience for the future.
