Emma Withers reports
10 boys travelled to Loughborough this weekend for the Midland XC Championships at Prestwold Hall.
Following a good warm up, the u15 boys headed for the start line. Eoin O’Halloran quite literally knew how it felt to walk in someone else’s shoes, having forgotten his spikes and borrowing an already worn pair from one of our u13 finishers. Eoin was the first B&W boy back home in 41st place (13.29), followed closely by Nick Pestell being available for his first race with us this season, in 43rd place (13.52). Amos Kingston continuing his improvement in 66th place and pleased to just tuck under 14 mins (13.58) and completing the team the ever reliable Joseph Hull, 74th place (14.09). Tomek Czerepinski had a much improved race, having struggled with injury and illness this season, saw his form beginning to return, 95th (14.51), Jacob Franklin in his trademark fluorescent socks slogged up the final hill 104th (15.22), those parkrun practice hills paying off. Alex Robertson, ably cheered on by his Grandad, did not give in and finished in 115th place (17.04) and a smiling but determined Joe McNamara 118th position (18.02) completed our second team.
In the Under 17 Mens race, Oliver Harper promised a top 20 finish and didn’t disappoint with 14th place (21.59), making up a place right on the finish line, with only 2 seconds between him and the athlete from Corby AC. Jay Akbar found the conditions challenging, with deep mud to work through in places, battled on and came through in 62nd place (24.54).
Well done to all 10 athletes who took on the challenging course! We will miss some of them at the Gwent League on the 8th as this clashes with the South West Schools in Bournemouth. Good luck to those boys who have qualified and we hope to see everyone else on the start line at Chepstow.
