Mike Strange reports
I am pleased to report a momentous sprint performance for Bristol & West AC where Hannah WILLIAMS twice smashed the Club Record that she held jointly with Emily DIAMOND / LEONARD to set a great 7.56 secs in the Blue Ribbon of Indoor races, the 60m. Before racing I had congratulated her on achieving a
time of 7.58 earlier in January and she replied “I will need to do better this week”. Well she did. An easy 7.62 in the heat led to a brilliant 7.57 in the semi-final. In the Final tensions were high with top seed Marilyn NWAWULOR being disqualified for jumping the start. The re-start saw a great tussle between the
3 top competitors and a blanket finish with all 3 finishing within one hundredth of a second of each other. Disappointingly Hannah was only placed 3rd (same time as second place) but she had achieved a great pb and new Club Record of 7.56 secs. Well done Hannah and to Coach Darryl MAYNARD who was also delighted.
In the Men’s 60m sprint we had 2 competitors, Scott BAJERE and new signing Richard TREMBLEN. Scott matched his time of last week with 7.08 secs to get to the semi-final where he improved to record a very good 7.02 secs. However this was not quite sufficient for him to make the final. Richard who trains at Whitehall and comes to us via Cheltenham and Swansea put in two sound runs of 7.09 & 7.10 but also just failed to make the final. Richard will be a great asset to our National League team in 2020 and we welcome him to the Club.
Matt CURTIS had things easier than the sprinters as the 60m hurdles was run as a straight final. Matt was just a shade down on last week’s 7.4 secs with 7.68 secs and missed the medals to finish in 4th place. Otis MONDIR set out to put last week’s DQ out of his mind and after a last minute lunge at the finish line made the Final with 2:02.52. His final was a far more comfortable race without much jostling but after being initially well placed he faded back to take 5th place in a similar time of 2:02.64.
Andrea JESUDASON and Tim LEONG both ventured out in the Long Jump with Andrea being quite unhappy with her 5.17m clearance. She never really got going with early no jumps but then this was her first outing of the season. Tim U20 the brother of our outstanding Pole Vaulter, Ester has just joined us and cleared a near to his best 5.52m finishing just behind GB’s outstanding Decathlete David AWDE so he was in good company. Welcome to Bristol & West Tim you have made a good move.
These Championships went out live on ‘Vinco’ and the recordings can still be picked up on the Welsh web site if anyone is interested. The races with B&W athletes in are well worth a watch. Vinco link.
