Monthly committee update #2 – March 2019

Each month we’ll profile a different committee member, give an update on what the committee’s been working on, and look forward to future projects.

Meet… Owain Jones, Club Secretary

Owain joined the club in 2010 and most enjoys running cross country and in the mountains. He hopes that maybe 2019 will be the year that Bristol and West can win the senior men’s title at the National XC relays!

Owain powers to victory at the SW XC Champs in January

As Club Secretary, Owain is the primary external contact for the club and is involved with organisation of committee meetings and the club AGM, amongst other things.

The Committee are extremely grateful to Owain for balancing his own (pretty elite) running career with all that he does for the club!

What have we been working on?

Recent committee projects include:

  • The Hargreaves Awards – the committee facilitate the allocation of these – see below for details of this year’s worthy recipients.
  • The club AGM – Owain’s been busy organising this one, as mentioned above! (And it’s on Friday 26th April, just in case you haven’t got it in your diary yet…)
  • Maintaining our facilities – as last month, this has taken up much of our time!
    • There is an ongoing project that aims to provide us with a (much needed!) clubhouse at Whitehall, which, despite challenges, rumbles on and is looking more positive as we move into 2019.
    • The need for a full-time facilities manager has been identified, and we’re going to be recruiting for this position soon.
The Hargreaves Awards 2019

This year we had a record number of applicants, almost twice that in previous years, for these awards that were introduced some 12 years ago through the generosity of our President Peter Hargreaves. This made the selection process more difficult than ever and necessitated some adjustment in the size of the awards agreed.
We wish all those successful applicants the best of luck for the coming season and look forward to see them flying the Bristol & West flag!

What’s coming up?

We’re excited for the relaunch of the club’s 5k race series – big thanks to Steve Grant for all his hard work on this, including in searching out courses…he’s spent many an evening wondering round bits of Bristolian tarmac in the dark, checking on traffic levels and looking for tight corners!

The test event for the re-vamped ‘Pomphrey 5k’ is to be held on Tuesday 26 March. Let Steve know if you want to run or if you can help marshal on the night.

We’re also working on getting dates in the diary for the summer club fun day, and the ‘Night of the 5000s’ event.

A reminder that the AGM is a chance to get involved in your club: we’ll have a host of committee positions up for grabs, in addition to non-committee volunteer roles too. If you have ideas about how the club could be doing things better, then we want you there and we want you to get involved!
