Track and field update

06 Feb

TThis week we cover events at Cardiff, Lee Valley, Eton, Carshalton, Sheffield, Luxembourg  & two meets in the USA.

The key event Indoors this week was the Welsh Junior Championships at Cardiff.  Surprisingly only two of our many young stars thought to enter? New signing Cally WALDER (entered as a guest in the U20 Pole Vault) battled for first place and matched the eventual winner right through just being edged out on countback with a very close to best 3.53m clearance.  Cally’s best is 3.54m and she had 3 narrow failures at 3.63m. Looking good. Owen GARRETT (yes Dean’s son) competed in the U13 Boys Shot and improved his best to 6.08m which is a Club Record. Again well done Owen.

Returning to her home Country of Luxembourg for a major competition Silvia AMABILINO sprang back to real form after a disappointing Vault in Cardiff in January to clear 3.65m.

Whist on the Pole Vault theme International Lucy BRYAN returned to the Akron Invitational where she set her pb last year of 4.47m to record another outstanding Vault to record a seasons best of 4.38m.  At Carshalton in Vault London associate (she trains with us at Whitehall) U15 Nyree PERRY cleared a very close to her best 2.92m.

On 30th Jan at the Inter-Varsity event at Lee Valley we had a number of competitors.  Jamie ANDERSON cleared an outstanding 2.00m in the High Jump and Michael PROFFIT had a solid double in the 800m & 1,500m clocking 1:59.01 & 4:10.35.  HCA Members Yvette WESTWOOD and Gamuchirai DOMBUTSHENA were prominent with Gam clearing 6.56m in the Long Jump and Yvette doing a sprint double with 7.80 (60m) & 25.59 (200m) clockings.  Men’s ‘Newcomer of the Year for 2018’ season U23 Dajon WRIGHT ran his first competitive 60m Hurdles and recorded an outstanding 8.77 secs to move to 4th on our ‘All Time’ ranking list.  Dajon also recorded 8.80 secs at Loughborough on 2nd Feb to back up that fine performance.

At Sheffield ‘EIS Arena’ on 30th Jan U20 400m Hurdler & Pole Vaulter Madeline HARTNOLL (now at Leeds University) emerged to run a 200m in 30.46.  This was a debut on the track for Maddy who is finding the lack of facilities in Leeds a bit of a problem.

In the USA Hugh SADLER commenced his Indoor Season and competed in a 1,000m in Princetown where he clocked 2:34.16.

And finally at Eton on Sunday HCA Member and U20 International Jenna BLUNDELL competed at 60m and 60m Hurdles to clock outstanding times of 7.93 and 8.66 & 8.75.
