B&W Youngsters shine in Neath – Saturday 19th May 2018

20 May

Neither the Royal Wedding, nor the FA cup final nor a conveniently placed endurance training weekend could stop the Bristol and West/Mendip AC composite team (Under-13 and Under-15) from winning Round 2 of the Youth Development League competition on a hot summers day in South Wales.
Although we missed quite a few of the big winners from the first round, and Neath Harriers , on their home track, were able to earn 200 more points than their Round 1 score , it gave the club the opportunity to draw on its new found strength in depth and still win the match by 96 points.
There were too many great results to mention but a special mention must go to Josh Shriver who achieved the English schools Qualifying standard of 35.22 in the Discus in his first year of the age group and Clementine Houlden, with her grade 1 performance of 4.05 in the Under-13 Girls 1,200 metres.
The sprints were generally slower due to the slight headwind but there were personal bests for Damani Jones (12.09 U15 B), Chloe Marrett (13.13 U15 G) and debutant Xander Pena Gil (12.21 U15 B). Libby Dickens (12.59 U15 G 75m Hurdles) Nyah Reuter (12.86 U13 G 70 m hurdles) and Chloe Tunnicliffe (13.17 U13 G 70m Hurdles) continue to bring their times down every time they race.
A feature of Round 2 was athletes competing in events outside their favoured. This started off with Josh Shriver competing in the High Jump, Damani Jones winning the B Shot Put , Kaylen Smith launching the Javelin for the points, Xander winning the B Discus and Isaac Fleming making up the team in the 4 x 300 metres relay .
Young Sam Rudge, doubled up as a sprinter and middle distance runner, Jay Akbar and Steve Kerfoot all performed well in the sun, as did our middle distance girls (Danni Sinclair and Grace Claridge).
The club was very well supported by a small contingent from Mendip AC with the Stillwell sisters , Ellie Chivers, Thea Piercy all doing a sterling job.
The next event is in Hereford on the 17th June 2018 but the most important match is the promotional match on 21st July 2018 where we are very likely to be up against local rivals Yate and District and Bath AC. .We will need to be at our best in order to get the promotion the club deserves.
