After a long lead time to check the course and other arrangements for the race, the Filton Flyer 5k finally got under way with the first race on Tuesday 27th March 2018. A big thank you to Roger Brocklesby and his team for staging a successful event. Publicity for the first race had been limited with a view to having manageable numbers for the first proper running of the event and this was achieved with 80 competitors competing.
First home was Brett Halliwell of Stroud & District Athletic Club setting the future bench mark for the course at 15:42 and being the only man to run sub-16 minutes. The runner-up was under-17 Max Davis of Avon Valley Runners in 16:01 with James Chantler-Mayne of Cheltenham Harriers third in 16:11.
The first lady home was under-17 Orli Cranston of Avon Valley Runners in 19:50 just two seconds in front of her club-mate Rebecca Beck in 19:52 with Veryan Cranston – also of Avon Valley Runners – giving that club a clean sweep of the Women’s podium.
It was great to see Avon Valley Runners and Cheltenham Harriers who have been staunch supporters of the various incarnations of our 5k road race supporting this latest version and I am sure that, as with Bristol & West, they will turn out in bigger numbers for the next race.
Of the Bristol & West contingent Maciej BIALOGONSKI was first male athlete home in sixth place in 16:26, while Charlotte BERMINGHAM was first female athlete from Bristol & West, also in sixth place in 20:32.
Full age category results are included in the race results below:
The series continues with the second race at Filton on Tuesday 24th April 2018 when those who are competing are asked to allow more time to register and make their way to the start.
