Whilst the hills at Prestwold Hall, Loughborough might not be as challenging as those at Parliament Hill the mud certainly was so that the 2017/2018 Winter Cross-Country season headed towards its finale (for those of you who are not at school) with testing conditions underfoot. A true reflection of this year’s winter.
Ten club athletes competed across the age groups for Avon & Somerset with Megan HORNUNG making a strong county debut finishing eightieth out of 302 in the Under-13 Girls’ race in15:48.
Joseph HULL has been a great supporter of the Under-13 Boys team this year and supported the county finishing 237th of the 309 finishers in the under-13 Boys’ race in 15:04.
Claudia SPICE placed ninety-eighth in the Under-15 Girls’ race out of 304 in 21:24 and was pleased to make the top 100.
Our biggest contingent was in the Senior Women’s race which also saw Eleanor DAVIS our highest placed finisher in thirteenth in 34:39. Natalie GRIFFITHS finished sixty-second in 37:20, with Elaina GARD in eighty-seventh place in 38:19 and Catie O’DONOGHUE one hundred and eighth in 38:59. Two hundred and seventy finished and the times would indicate that the course was farther than the advertised 8 kilometres – even allowing for the soft going.
After supporting the National cross-country in numbers it appears many of the Senior Men were keeping their power dry for the Midland Road-Relays with only Will CHRISTOFI (twenty-first in 45:23) and Harry ALLEN (sixty-sixth in 47:29) racing the Inter-Counties. Harry had the satisfaction of producing a stronger performance than at Parliament Hill. Again the times would indicate that the distance was over the advertised 12 kilometres.
