Masters Indoor Track & Field Results Round-Up

After the snowy weather virtually stopped activity last week we were this week back in business with the main event being the National Masters Championships at Lee Valley on Saturday and Sunday 10th and 11th March 2018.

Four of our very prominent ‘older’ athletes took part and each obtained at least one medal. Bristol & West AC are truly proud of you all.

First to the sprints where that wonderful V60 athlete Caroline POWELL again won the 400 metres, where I believe she still is the current holder of the World Best Time.  Now at the top of her age group she still turned out a remarkable sub 70 second performance with a 69.94 clocking.  Carol also challenged in the 60 metres and just missed another medal but came away with a 9.10 second time for fourth place.

V60 Dave BEDWELL starred in the longer distance races and soundly won his 1,500 metres final on the Saturday by 4.2 seconds in 4:55.25 to make him Masters Champion both indoors and outdoors.  However, returning on the Sunday Dave was faced with a challenge from youngster Peter MOUNTAIN.  As in Cardiff recently Peter tracked Dave closely then stormed past with 150 metres to go and held on comfortably to win finishing in 2:27.42 to take the Gold Medal.  That also makes Pete indoors and outdoors Maters Champion.  Dave’s excellent Silver Medal in 2:28.24 was a prelude to his later 3,000 metres run where he finished fifth in 10:58.98.  How many of our redoubtable youngsters are capable of Championship performances at 800 metres, 1,500 metres and 3,000 metres in one weekend?  Two medals gained as well – a very exceptional week-end Dave – well done.

Down to the much younger age groups V50 Tony ROPER followed his 4:44.58 1,500 metre PB on the Saturday with a superb Bronze Medal in the 3,000 metres again with a PB of 9:56.51.

Our redoubtable ladies distance runners chose not to travel to Lee Valley on this weekend but last weekend in very treacherous travel conditions V50 Sarah EVERITT made that journey to Lee Valley to compete in the Inter-Area match and came away with comfortable victories in the 800 metres in 2:36.55 and 3,000metres in 11:23.27.  Well done Sarah – you are a Champion.

One other notable performance in the Inter-Area by an ex-Bristol Athlete was  Jo WILLOUGHBY’s UK V50 Age record for the Triple Jump with a leap of 10.37 metres.  She obviously also won the National Title this week-end with a 10.25 metre triple jump.

Next week-end sees the last competition on the Indoor circuit for this season with the Midland Open Meet at Birmingham’s HIPAC and then we look forward to a very excellent outdoor season from all of our hard working athletes.
