Welsh ‘Open’ Senior Indoor Championships – NIAC Cardiff – Saturday 27th January 2018

28 Jan

The Bristol & West entry at Cardiff was minimal but the achievement was excellent.  We had only three Male Sprinters lining up but they did exceptionally well in a 30 strong entry.  In the first heat of the 60 metres Will KENNEDY lined up alongside among others eventual winner Sam GORDON and ex-member Chris STONE.   Will sadly false started in his last sprint race in Cardiff but this time he was away well and was just shaded by the two aforementioned (6.70 and 6.87) to hold third place comfortably in 7.06 seconds.  Scott BAJERE did even better to hold second place in the second heat with a 6.96 seconds clocking.  In later races we saw the likes of top International Harry AIKINES-ARYEETEY which indicates the quality of the field.

So to the finals Scott and Will just made the ‘B’ Final comfortably with those times and acquitted themselves wonderfully with second and third in that Final.  Scott nibbled a hundredth off his heat time with 6.95 seconds and just edged Will out (6.98 Seconds).  I think in Bristol colours this sees Will under 7 seconds for the first time so it shows that his season is coming together.

In the ‘A’ final Sam GORDON bettered Harry A-A with 6.71 and 6.75 clockings but Chris STONE who was third with 20 metres to go switched off and faded to seventh in 6.87 seconds.

In the 200 metre heats Bristol & West Coach and International athlete Debo ADEMUYEWO just failed to make the 4 man final after finishing second in his heat in 23.29 seconds.

One interesting observation by one of the Timekeepers was that in running the Cardiff ‘Park Run’ earlier in the day he came across one of our top Middle Distance runners Steve MITCHELL.  A classy entry to this very popular event?
