Club Ladies Out-Perform Men in UK Merit Rankings – 2017

28 Dec

While the club could not rank a single male athlete in the UK Merit rankings published in Athletics Weekly on 21st December 2017, six of our ladies were ranked in the top 10.

Emily DIAMOND placed second in the 400 metres merit rankings but was actually the fastest female 400 metre runner in the country in 2017 clocking 51.67. Lucy BRYAN also ranked second, in her case in the Pole Vault, with her best of 4 metres 40 centimetres. Charlotte TAYLOR-GREEN ranked fourth in the 2,000/3,000 metre steeplechase in the season that saw her break 10 minutes for the longer event for the first time.

Christina JONES ranked eighth in the Hammer having been sixth last year. Her best throw in 2017 of 62 metres 96 centimetres being 1 metre 2 centimetres shorter than her PB.

On the road Jenny SPINK was ranked ninth in the Half-Marathon on the back of a 73 minute 36 clocking in the Barcelona Half; while one place behind in tenth place was Kate REED on the basis of her win in Tallahassee where she clocked 73:44. Jenny was also ranked twelfth in the Marathon as a result of her 2 hour 38 minute 11 second run in London.

Well done Ladies – great results and let’s hope you can rank still higher in 2018 and be joined by a breakthrough into the Top 10 by some of our male athletes.

Worth a mention are our higher competition athletes Tom GALE (who was ranked second in the High Jump) and Ada’Ora CHIGBO who ranked twelfth in the Ladies High Jump.
