Thankfully the early 6.30am start did not deter any of the 9 lads plus parents who fancied a day out at one of the most important cross-country fixtures in the year. After a first class journey we arrived in plenty of time and even the weather was on our side as it stopped raining by the time we left the coach. Once numbers and chips were in place we proceeded to walk the course which was somewhat muddy in places and resulted in Luca losing both shoes. Luckily they were retrieved and athlete and shoes were soon reunited.
With time on our hands we had a great opportunity to observe the start and change-over procedure of the early races which was so helpful for this young and inexperienced team.
However, once the race began I was so pleasedwith the mature way they all handled the situation. Everybody was in the right place and proceeded to run at the right time.
The competition this year was extremely high with over 100 teams on the start line. I had hoped for our first team to come in 50th -60th so finishing 54th was excellent.
Amos Kingston showed what a difference a year can make as he ran 36 seconds quicker than last year.
Once everybody had finished we all celebrated with cake. Apart from travel sickness and a bloodied knee it was quite an uneventful day on this occasion.
Thank you parents for getting up so early plus your help and the supply of cakes. Think of the team from Cornwall who must of gone up the night before.!
