In the recently announced South-West Volunteer Awards the Club appeared twice.
Hilary Nash won the Volunteer of the Year Award for his work on so many fronts it was hard to cover them all in his nomination citation. As well as all the work he does for the club coaching, officiating, managing all the stationery for just about everyone in Avon’s athletics matches and helping team manage Team Avon in the Youth Development League (Upper Age Group), Hilary also finds time to be an active Member of the Avon Athletic Association Committee where he is Treasurer. As if all this was not enough he is also very active in Avon Sportshall Teams; team managing the Avon Team at regional and national final level. This level of commitment has been ongoing for more years than most people can remember and everyone in the club sends Hilary congratulations on this well deserved award that recognises years of commitment across many aspects of the sport.
The South-West now has an ‘Innovation Project of the Year’ Award and this year it was won by the Club’s Night of the Fast 5,000s Event at Yate. So a massive thank you to everyone who was involved in making that event the success it was. A twin track approach meant the event was aimed at providing great races for both performance athletes and newcomers to track running and from considerable feedback on social media it succeeded on both counts. We look forward to doing it again, bigger and better at least once in the summer of 2018.
The club was also pleased that Tony Jefferies was given an Award for Services to Athletics and Nigel Grist was Official of the Year. Both Tony and Nigel have their first allegiances to other clubs but are regular supporters of Club events (particularly our Open Meetings) and it is great to see their efforts being recognised.
