Well what more can I say – Saturday, two over 50 Ladies competing in the 1,500 metres Sarah Everitt Gold and Clare Jolliffe Silver, although I didn’t witness the race I understand that Sarah was a class act, being clinical in the last 100 metres – but wait two over 60 Men competing in the 1,500 metres Dave Bedwell Gold ahead of a fast finishing Peter Mountain for Silver.
Sunday saw the Everitt, Jolliffe combo go their separate ways; Clare taking the endurance route in the 5,000 metres whilst Sarah the lactate inducing 800 metres.
These races I did get to watch and wasn’t I in for a treat.
First up was Clare in the 5k. This was a combined age race from over 35 to 50’s. Clare set about her task with relentless ease making use of the younger runners in front and clocking regular 90 second laps. She used this to great effect, shaking off all rivals. Once she had secured an 80 metre buffer she eased back and was rewarded with her fastest track 5k time for two years 19:13 – Job done Clare.
Next up was Sarah in the 800 metres – again it was clinical moving into the lead just before the bell she held a steady but fast pace whilst the opposition fell away. Sarah had a race plan and executed it in her usual control and poise.
The last race to watch was a real treat as the Men’s 800 metres was a rematch of Dave and Pete from the 1,500 – I sensed unfinished business. This turned out to be a very good example of how to run to your strengths. The first lap was a pedestrian affair with no one willing to set the pace. The bell was taken in around 76-77 seconds which was the cue for Dave the 1,500 metre specialist to make his long run for home. Undeterred Pete stuck to him like glue and hit the lead in the back straight. Dave and over-60 current 800 metre UK rankings leader Allen Herdman of Tavistock weren’t finished and hung on for dear life until Pete kicked hard half way round the last bend to pull clear. Dave had a tremendous battle to the line and was rewarded with the Silver.
Well done to the Club and sorry for only reporting on the Middle Distance races as recorded.
