Relegation Looms for UK Women’s League Team

05 Jun

Despite a purple patch led by Kate MALTBY which saw the team rise to fifth place in the match at one point and a tremendous team spirit which saw athletes take on unfamiliar events in search of points the bottom line at Bedford on Saturday 3rd June 2017 was that the club finished eighth and last for the second match in a row.

Kate set a Division One record when winning the 3,000 metres in 9:05.6 and was only just outside the all-time League record of 9:04.9 and was well supported by Fiona MARKS who won the ‘B’ string in 10:02.7 for a big personal best. Kate then won the 1,500 metres in 4:30.1 and with Floren SCRAFTON winning the ‘B’ string 1,500 metres in 4:39.8 that meant 36 points out of a possible 36 in those two events.

In the 100 metres Yvette WESTWOOD finished fifth in 12.3 in the ‘A’ string with Bethan WAKEFIELD fourth in the ‘B’ string in 12.6. The same two athletes ran the 200 metres with Yvette finishing fifth in the ‘A’ race in 24.9 and Bethan seventh in the ‘B’ race in 26.1. With no specialist 400 metre runners middle distance runner Natalie GRIFFITHS stepped into the ‘A’ race where she finished seventh in 65.0,  Katherine GODFREY finished sixth in the ‘B’ race in 66.2. Natalie then ran the 800 metres finishing eighth in the ‘A’ race in 2:19.0. Floren finished third in the ‘B’ race in 2:19.3. With no Charlotte TAYLOR-GREEN we were without cover in the 2,000 metres steeplechase. In the hurdles Hattie DENT finished seventh in the ‘A’ 400 metres which was the first track race of the day, with Katherine GODFREY finishing sixth in the ‘B’ race in 70.0. In the 100 metres hurdles Hannah JACKSON finished fourth in the ‘A’ race in 15.2 with Hattie DENT fifth in the ‘B’ race in 17.3.

The track concluded with Yvette WESTWOOD running a quick last leg to bring the 4 x 100 metres relay team in seventh place – gaining an extra point right on the line. She then ran the last leg for the 4 x 400 metres relay team as they finished eighth.

In the field the jumps were a disaster area with only Katherine GODFREY clearing 1 metre 30 centimetres in the high jump to claim a single point in eighth pace in the High Jump ‘A’ string and Andrea JESUDASON finishing seventh in the ‘A’ string long jump with a best jump of 5 metres 34 centimetres and fifth in the triple jump ‘A’ string with a best jump of 11 metres 32 centimetres. Andrea then did a sterling job running the third leg for the 4 x 100 metre relay team.

Christine JONES and Rownita MARSTON were our mainstays in the field with Christina winning her specialist event the hammer with a throw of 58 metres 23 centimetres; Rownita finished fifth in the ‘B’ string with a best throw of 22 metres 94 centimetres. The pair then competed in the discus where they both finished seventh Rownita with 27 metres 97 centimetres and Christina 23 metres 82 centimetres. Christina had to duck out of the shot with a bad back which left Rownita to finish third in the ‘A’ string with a best putt of 12 metres 38 centimetres. Hannah JACKSON and Hattie DENT both had a go at Javelin and it was this sort of commitment that epitomized the performances of the team that was there on the day: Hannah threw 19 metres 53 centimetres for eighth in the ‘A’ string and Hattie threw 10 metres 19 centimetres for seventh in the ‘B’ string.

A big thank you to Carol and Mike Strange, Alan Dent and Peter Jackson for gaining the team 20 points for officials.

With only 2 league points we are now three points behind Bedford (5) and four points behind Enfield (6) and will probably need a top two finish in the final fixture at Leigh (Manchester) on Sunday 16th July 2017 if we are to avoid relegation. We have the athletes to do it IF everyone turns out and supports the team.
