|The conditions were certainly more favourable than they were for April’s seventh race in the series and numerous athletes took advantage of the benign conditions to record PBs. Up front it wasn’t the strongest race in the history of the event which left Jarlath MCKENNA of Bristol & West Athletic Club to come home a clear winner in 15:27. Behind him Phil RADFORD of Bristol & West Athletic Club was second in 15:36 to take 20 seconds off his previous PB. In third place was Michael Towler of Avon Valley Runners in 15:53. Having run 16:02 in March Maciej BIALOGONSKI came agonisingly close to 16 minutes again as he finished fifth in 16:03, ten seconds in front of David AWDE who seemed to disappear off the course for a few seconds after a very fast start before deciding to see it through and joining in to run 16:13 for sixth. Neil KENNEDY shaved a few seconds off his PB as he finished tenth in 16:37.
In the Ladies race Fiona MARKS showed the type of result her form has suggested for a while as she took the ladies race in 17:22 to take 25 seconds off her 5k road PB. Runner up was her training partner Olivia SADLER also from Bristol & West in 17:52, as she just got the better of Nicola BROOKLAND who clocked 17:53 to finish third lady and first W35.
In the age categories race regular Aidan Noble of Westbury Harriers was first under-17 in 17:01. First M40 was Mark James of Cheltenham Harriers in 16:22. First M45 was Martyn Green of Thornbury Runners in 17:48, just one second ahead of first M50 Jeremy Mower of Gloucester Athletic Club. The first M55 and a regular winner in this category was Ken Ham of Westbury Harriers in 19:14. Jon GOODLAND of Bristol & West Athletic Club was the first M60 in 20:32 with another regular Arthur Daley of Gloucester Athletic Club finishing first M65 in 20:11.
Among the mature ladies Fee Maycock of Cheltenham Harriers was first F45 in 19:31 with Kate Sackett of Cirencester Athletic Club (another race regular) taking the W55 honours in 20:56.
Other club members to run PBs were Paul Jefferson (19 seconds), Gordon Everett (47 seconds!), Molly Chilton (38 seconds), Daniel Morgan (23 seconds), Emma Rossiter (16 seconds) and Meriel Bergin (46 seconds). Well done all of you.
As always our thanks go to Roger Brocklesby, the Race Director, and his band of volunteer helpers who make the event possible.
The final race of the 2016/2017 series will take place at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday 27th June 2017 when the event hosts the Avon County 5k Mob Match.
