The bright conditions with a slight wind were obviously to the liking of the club athletes in the Bristol 10k on Sunday 7th May 2017. Having won the team challenge at the 2016 Great Bristol 10k and Great Bristol Half-Marathon there was pressure on the club’s representatives to live up to that standard and they didn’t disappoint with nine finishers in the Top 20 in the race. Owain JONES was first club male home in 31:01 having passed through the 3k point in a leading group of 6 in 9:20. Harry ALLEN was second man home in seventh place as he reduced his PB from 34:05 to 32:24. Phil RADFORD was third club finisher in ninth place as he too recorded a PB in 32:51. Maciej BIALOGONKSI made the top ten; finishing tenth in 33:02 closely followed by David AWDE (eleventh in 33:05) both recording PBs.
Graham BREEN was sixteenth in 33:25, Andy SALMON was seventeenth in 33:28 just ahead of an amazing run from Kate MALTBY who won the Women’s race in eighteenth place overall in 33:29. Other club ladies were also running well with Fiona MARKS fifth lady in 36:27 (85th overall) and Rebecca AWDE finishing in 37:36 – both PBs.
Others to record PBs were Pete BAINS, Henry SLY, Neville GASCOIGNE, Andy TARRANT, Sean LEE, Dan SCHOFIELD, Peter GANDON, Ivan USENKO, Billy COCHRANE, Andy DRAKE, Gordon EVERETT, Peter MOUNTAIN, Claire JOLLIFFE, Bruce SELLERS, Amelia ATKINSON, Alice DOGGRELL, Rosey MUSHENS, Jules PFLAUM, Tanya CHOWDHURY, Stuart PRESNELL, Graham GROUT, Will JONES, Bob COX and Nicola OLDROYD. Sorry if we have missed anyone.
The list of club runners we are aware of is below (96 are shown as club members although only 62 joined through the club runner scheme administered by the club);
With results like that I think it is safe to calculate that the club won the ‘Club Challenge’ for 2017 – we await to hear the official result.
There are individuals who entered the race as “Bristol & West Athletic Club” but who have not paid their membership for 2017 – if you haven’t paid for 2017 you are not a club member and if you want to continue running under the club banner you need to rejoin the club. If you are a paid-up club member and you have entered as such then please run in your club colours (if you don’t you won’t count for the club in the club challenge!).
As of tomorrow the club will begin to take club entries for the Great Bristol Half Marathon which will take place on Sunday 17th September 2017. Club entries are £31:20 (discounted from the race entry price of £39. To find out more contact Club Development Adviser – Keith Brackstone at email@example.com.
Thanks to everyone from the club who ran, marshalled or supported – it was a great event and the club was shown in a tremendous light which can only help us grow both our numbers and strength as the powerhouse of athletics in general and road-running in particular in Bristol and the surrounding area.
