|Two of the three ingredients for a Fast 5k were present at Aztec West on Tuesday 25th April 2017 but the third, suitable weather conditions, were noticeably lacking. A post race chat with former Bristol & West member Ollie Mott (Cheltenham Harriers) revealed his intention to go looking for 14:30 and an opening mile in 4:37 showed this was on the cards but a chilly night which 9 minutes into the race degenerated into a heavy hail shower put paid to that. His club colleague Phil Beastall (Cheltenham Harriers) had no such qualms and pressed on for the win and it must be said that 14:54 was a great run in pretty adverse conditions. Behind him Ollie passed James Rodgers to take second in 15:28 with James (North Somerset AC) completing the podium positions in 15:30.
Just as the Cheltenham Harriers coaches were out on the course encouraging their runners so Keith Brackstone was trying to lift members of his group from Bristol & West to new heights and fourth placer Harry ALLEN was the first to oblige as he worked his way through the field to finish fourth in 15:34 in what is according to Power of 10 his first 5k on the road or the track. At this rate his 34:05 10k best must be due for a major revision at the Great Bristol 10k on Sunday 7th May 2017. Ben MITCHELL finished sixth in 15:39 to take 36 seconds off his PB, while David AWDE in ninth place recorded his fastest 5k road race since a 15:05 back in 2004.
Will DAVIDSON ran sub-16 for the first time as he took 19 seconds off his 16:07 PB lowering it to 15:48 in tenth position. Andy SALMON finished thirteenth in 16:00 for a 23 second PB plus he held off Kit GRIERSON (fourteenth in 16:01) with whom he had a race long battle. Kit also ran a PB taking 9 seconds off the time he posted back on 27th January 2015. Jarlath MCKENNA finished fifteenth in 16:04 – just two days after a PB in the London Marathon (what can I say – mad or what?) – probably in Jarlath’s eyes a 16:04 5k road race is a recovery run these days.
Neil KENNEDY finished twenty-first in 16:43 and was another to run a PB – but expressed his disappointment at not breaking 16:30. Steve Williams (coach to Ruth Barnes) thought Ruth (Avon Valley Runners) would have run sub 16:30 in better conditions: on the night 16:52 was good enough for twenty-second place and first Lady home. Behind her Georgina Schwiening of Cambridge & Coleridge closed to 9 seconds behind as she clocked 17:01 for the runner-up slot in the Ladies race. Hillary Mott finished third lady in 17:49, just holding off Olivia SADLER who ran 17:51 to lower her PB from 18:08. However, with a track 5,000 PB of 16:54 there is a lot more to come if Olivia puts her mind to it.
In the age categories James Chantler-Mayne (Cheltenham Harriers) clocked 15:40 to run out a clear winner of the under-17 Men’s race. Darren Jordan (Unattached) ran 16:38 to take the M40 honours, with Jon Mansfield (Tewkesbury AC) first M45 in 17:44. In the older age groups it was a case of the usual suspects to the fore with Jeremy Mower (Gloucester AC) first M50 in 17:31, Ken Ham (Westbury Harriers) first M55 in 18:42, Dave BEDWELL (Bristol & West AC) first M60 in 18:38 and Arthur Daley (Gloucester AC) first M65 in 20:32. t is great to see so many regulars competing on a monthly basis.
Among the Ladies the age group winners were Ruth Barnes (Avon Valley) as first F35 in 16:52, Jackie Rockliffe (Avon Valley Runners) first F45 in 19:15 and Kate Sackett (Cirencester AC) first F55 in 20:43.
There were 158 finishers and our thanks go to Roger Brocklesby and his team for another well organised event. The eighth race in the nine race series will take place on Tuesday 30th May 2017 when another month’s training and better conditions should see even more PBs.
