Club athletes were in short supply at the Inter-Counties Cross-Country held at Prestwold Hall, Loughborough on Saturday 11th March 2017 with runners in only the Under-13 and Senior age groups. Joe MEAD was our only under-13 Boy and will have gained invaluable experience tackling this event in which he finished 185th in 13:29; his Mum was on hand to give support and the club acknowledges that it is this level of parental support that is essential in encouraging our young athletes. In the under-13 Girls race it was Alice BRIDGER MORALES flying the club flag in the colours of Avon & Somerset coming home 160th in 14:41 with Grace ASHURST 214th in 15:01. In the under-17 women’s race Alice DAVIES finished eighty-fifth in 22:39 with Elizabeth PLEWS 207th in 24:28.
Volunteers from across the two counties were almost as hard to come by as athletes and Chris ELSON (Senior Men) and Keith BRACKSTONE (Senior Ladies) stepped in to team manage the senior teams. Helen BEGGS again to chose to maintain her Scottish connection finishing seventy-ninth for Scotland East in 33:28 meaning that Natalie GRIFFITHS was first club runner home for Avon & Somerset in 112th place in 34:44. The ever youthful Claire JOLLIFFE put younger athletes to shame with a very solid 169th place in 36:16, while Ellen HARRISON showed she is recovering her fitness by finishing 195th in 37:07.
The last race of the day saw Jack MILLAR continue his recent good run of form with a well judged race that saw him finish forty-fourth in 40:38. David AWDE also avoided starting too fast and ra a steady race to finish 159th in 43:41 in a rare outing over 12 kilometres of cross-country.
