Youth Development League – Upper Age Group

Hilary Nash has attached an introductory note together with the information provided by the two team managers for the Under-17s and Under-20s together with a copy of the timetable that will be used for the first three fixtures. All coaches are asked to encourage athletes they coach to put themselves forward for selection. Athletes will only be selected if they provide the team managers with their information.
The League does provide the opportunity to compete within the athlete’s own age group and in 2017 pretty close to home for the majority of our members.
The team faces the same teams for the first three fixtures and for the fourth fixture the top three teams then compete against the top three from the Midland Premier North/East. That match decides which teams progress to the National Finals.
The other new feature is that there are non-scoring places available and the novelty is that the choice of event is down to the athletes. Six places per gender but no more than 3 to do field events. So it could in theory be three extra in the Men’s Under-17 long jump or even six extra in the Women’s Under-17 800 metres. There is scope for imaginative use of the meetings but clearly with the objective of athlete development with team managers’ approval.
The club hopes that the League will get enthusiastic support from our members and make selection a little more interesting and fulfilling for the team managers. It can be frustrating knowing there are athletes out there who could be competing but do not commit to their chosen sport! Matches can be lost by a few points not because our athletes were not good enough but simply because there needed to be a few more vacant slots filled.
There is no event entry fee so that is a factor. The team members do need an Avon AA vest which is available at £10 for a new vest or some used vests are available at £5. The vests do cost just over £15 so there is a discount met by Avon AA.
So let’s have some enthusiastic support so that B&W makes a bigger contribution to composite Team Avon’s enabling the team hopefully to qualify for the National Finals. It is achievable if athletes turn out.
