Competing events, illness, injury and probably distance gave us a depleted seniors turnout at the last Gwent League cross-country of the season but all of those who did compete did a great job at a venue and course that seemed to be universally liked bar maybe the very long finishing straight. The artificial ski slope and toboggan course gives a useful post-race diversion if this venue is used again.
We had a total of eight runners in the seniors women’s race who surely did more than enough to retain the team title. The team had an interesting age profile with one Under-23, one SW, one W35, two W45, two W50 and one W55. First home was Helen Sharpe (7th) followed by the excellent packing of Sarah Everitt (12th), Clare Jolliffe (14th), Isabel Craner (26th), Emma Jolliffe (43rd), Ali Hurford (92nd), Emma Withers (103rd) and Carol Kiekuth (136th).
The men’s team had four runners with five needed to complete a team and we were up against it to hold our slender lead in the team competition. The four that ran gave their all in trying to secure the team title against the odds. Maciej Bialogonski finished in ninth place with Will Davidson and Henry Sly not far behind in fourteenth and fifteenth. Hans-Peter Kiekuth agreed to run on the day to help make up the team numbers and given he has to manage a health issue when he runs, came in a very creditable 206th
Congratulations go to Will Davidson who was second in the male University competition for the series despite having run only four of the five races.
We await confirmation of the individual and team series positions when the results are published.
