The fifth of the Aztec West Fast 5K Series for 2016-17 that the club organizes was held on yet another wet and windy night on Tuesday 28th February 2017. Although 174 athletes finished this was over 50 fewer than at January’s race and several were probably keeping their powder dry in the hope that the conditions on Tuesday 28th March 2017 will help the race live up to its billing as the ‘Fast 5k’.
After several near misses Jarlath MCKENNA finally got his name on the Race Winners Board as he came home six seconds clear of Ben Price of Cheltenham Harriers to win in 15:29: this was only Jarlath’s seventh fastest time over the course and apart from showing his consistency it also shows that last night’s conditions were not conducive to fast times. Will Crudgington of Zoot Athos Triathlon was third in 15:35, just one second in front of Josh MOODY of Bristol & West whose 15:36 clocking shaved eight seconds off his PB – a good result given the conditions. Josh Dixon, now of Stroud & District AC, finished fifth in 15:41 and James Rodgers completed the first half dozen for North Somerset AC in 15:48.
There was another new winner in the Women’s race with Georgina Schwiening of Cambridge & Coleridge taking the Ladies win in 17:27. Zoe Wassell was second in 17:34 with Natasha Cockran of the Micky Morris Running Team third in 18:05. First female from Bristol & West was Olivia SADLER in 18:08 in fourth place which shows she is regaining her fitness following her break after a hard time on her scholarship in the US. It would be great to see Olivia running for the club in the Midland and National Road Relays this spring.
In the age categories Aiden Noble of Westbury Harriers was a convincing winner of the Under-17 Men’s category in 16:38; forty-three seconds clear of the runner up Otto Copping of Team Bath. Darren Jordan of Cheltenham Harriers was first M40 in 16:57, which placed him twenty-first overall. Steve Wood of Clevedon AC was first M45 in 18:12 but he was behind M50 category winner Jeremy Mower of Gloucester AC who clocked 17:46. Ken Ham of Westbury Harriers was first M55 in 18:58, Peter England of Frampton Cottrell Harriers was first M60 in 20:31 and Tom BURGESS of Bristol & West AC was first M65 in 23:32.
India Ibbotson of Team Bath was the only Under-17 Lady to finish; her time was 20:59. Holly Tugwell of Cirencester AC was first W35 in 18:27, while Louise Cronin of Great Western Runners was first W45 in 20:49. Tracy ALLAN of Bristol & West AC took the W55 category by exactly one minute in 20:07 with her time 32 seconds quicker than the fastest athlete in the W45 category.
As usual a big thank you to Roger Brocklesby, Race Director, and his team of helpers.
