Seven Bristol & West athletes ran in the South-West Vets Cross-Country Championships at Sidmouth on Sunday 29th January 2017. It was a single race of 6k around some pretty benign if muddy terrain and the latter part was run in heavy rain with a wind blowing in from the sea to add to our pleasure.
About 80 odd runners were started by one of the competitors standing on the start line and shouting 1,2,3, go and dropping his hand. Very vets, and who needs anything more.
The vets only races are characterised by many categories within categories and we maximised our opportunities to bring home some prizes. Steve GOSS made a return back after injury winning the race, the M45 category and the M45 Championship for South-West vet members.
Matt ROBINSON was second in the race and the M45 category. Steve GRANT was fourth M45 but because Matt and the third place M45 aren’t SW Vet members, was awarded second place for the S-W Vet Championships and shamelessly accepted it.
The M55 category is the most heavily fought in the male vet community and Jon Goodland led the way in fourth place with Pete Mountain eighth.
Our two female runners won their categories with Rosey Mushens second lady overall and first W45. Henrietta Anstey was first W35 and also won the South-West Vet Championship in that age group.
All in all a relaxed and good, if wet day out.
Major vet events for later in the year are:
National Masters Road Relays – Saturday 20th May 2017.
South-West Vets Track Championships – Sunday 18th June 2017.
