Indoor Track and Field Round Up – Saturday/Sunday 14th and 15th January 2017

In addition to the performances reported on by Mike Strange there were other club athletes in action over the weekend.   Scott BAJERE has started over 60 metres with a bang, coming sixth in the 60 metres at the South of England Championships in 6.87 after a 6.86 semi-final on Saturday 14th January 2017. Chris STONE won his heat in the 400 metres a very easy 50.04 at the same meeting but had to pull out of the semi-final as he gets over flu. This was his first race since August 2016. Matt NEWTON was fourth in his heat of the 400 metres in 53.33. New Higher Competition member Jack PAGET was fifth in the Shot Putt with a best putt of 11.49 metres. Senior Men’s Team Captain Caspar ELIOT opened his season’s Indoor account with a 1:56.73 over 800 metres at the same meeting.

Mark COTTAM managed an Indoor 200 metre PB of 23.33 and then a 600 metre PB of 1:23.89 at Sport City Manchester on 8th January 2017, showing he is in excellent shape to push his 400 metre times well down as the season progresses, and Jamie ANDERSON opened with a 1.89 metre high jump clearance in Birmingham for another indoor PB on 14th January 2017.

Possibly the most impressive performance was from Tom GALE who opened his High Jump season by equalling Olympian Chris Baker’s 2.15 metre in Cardiff. This was 10 centimetres above his opener in 2016, so here’s hoping he continues that progression and heads well over 2.20 metres in 2017!

While on the subject of high jumping Charlotte MARTIN cleared 1 metre 45 centimetres for a PB competing indoors in Birmingham on Saturday 14th January 2017. Another member of the Club’s UK Women’s League Team, Abby MILES, was in long jump action at Lea Valley on Sunday 15th January 2017 where she finished seventh with a best jump of 4 metres 54 centimetres.
