Club Athletes Perform Well in UK Trial for European Cross-Country Team

01 Dec

Will CHRISTOFI produced the stand-out performance among several good performances by club athletes in the Liverpool leg of the UK Cross-Challenge Series held at Sefton Park on Saturday 26th November 2016. The race doubled up as the trial to select the UK Team for the European Cross-Country. Will finished eighteenth and third in the under-23 category in the Senior Men’s race in 29:54. He was just 12 seconds behind under-23 winner Jonathan Davies of Reading and has been confirmed in the UK team for the European Cross-Country to be held in Chia, Italy on Sunday 11th December 2016. Other finishers in the senior race were Ben WESTHENRY in fifty-sixth place in 31:02, Owain JONES sixty-fourth in 31:08 and Rich PETERS in sixty-sixth place in 31:12. Jack MILLAR finished one-hundredth in 31:49 and, like Will, he and Ben are under-23.

In the Senior Women’s race Kate MALTBY finished eleventh in 27:30 just 19 seconds behind race winner Gemma Steele: this might be enough to secure Kate a run out for England in the Belgian Cross race before Christmas but I know she will be disappointed to have missed out on the Team for the European Championships.

In the under-17 men’s race Hugh SADLER finished in seventh place which was a great run and left him only 12 seconds behind race winner Joseph Pollard of Charnwood and seven seconds off the bronze medal.

We all wish Will well in his UK debut on 11th December 2016.
