The third of the Aztec West Fast 5K Series for 2016-17 that the club organizes was held on a bitterly cold night on Tuesday 29th November 2016. This didn’t stop 206 runners competing and the race seeing a new course record for the Senior Men and the second fastest ever time from a Lady runner.
Matt Clowes of Cardiff Athletic Club was a clear winner with his time of 14:41 eclipsing the previous men’s course record of 14:45 that was held jointly by Phil Wylie (Cheltenham Harriers from 30th June 2015) and Dave Bishop (Bristol & West from 26th July 2016). In second place Oli Mott (Cheltenham Harriers) clocked 15:06 and must be establishing a record as one of the most prolific runners of race. In third place and hot on Oli’s heels was his club mate Phil Beastall in 15:08. Alex Matchett of Bristol University was fourth in 15:13 with Jarlath McKENNA first Bristol & West runner in a PB equaling 15:15 in fifth place.
There were several other PBs from Bristol & West Club members including:
Josh MOODY down from 16:14 to 15:46 in eleventh place
Will DAVIDSON down from 16:37 to 16:07 in eighteenth place
Maciej BIALOGONSKI down from 16:23 to 16:10 in twentieth place
Henry SLY down to 16:38 in thirty-third place
Daisy MUMMERY ran 19:41 in 105th place
Anna PEARCE ran 20:41 in 128th place
Ruth Barnes of Avon Valley Runners flew (or should it be skated) round the course in 16:41 to finish first lady and only miss Kate HULLS’ course record of 16:38 from 28th July 2015 by 3 seconds. Behind her Charlotte TAYLOR-GREEN ran 17:27 for second place with Natalie Griffiths (Rotherham Athletic Club) third in 18:24. Natalie has recently moved to Portishead and we hope to see her in Bristol & West colours soon after a couple of sessions with Keith Brackstone’s group already.
In the age categories Rosie Allen of Westbury Harriers was the sole under-17 Lady finishing in 19:40, Charlotte TAYLOR-GREEN was first senior lady and Ruth Barnes was first W35 as well as overall ladies winner. Masters international Clare JOLLIFFE (Bristol & West) was first W45 in 18:48 and Kate Sackett of Cirencester Athletic Club was first W55 in 21:16.
In the Men’s age categories Oscar Rogers of Taunton Athletic Club made the trip up the M5 worthwhile as he won the under-17 Men’s category in 16:25. Race winner Matt Clowes was first senior man and Anthony Bailey of Cheltenham Harriers was the first M40 in 15:52, while David Williams of Pontypridd Roadents was first M45 in 17:34 although his time was eclipsed by Jeremy Mover of Gloucester Athletic Club who took M50 honours in 17:30. Ken Ham of Westbury Harriers was first M55 in 18:50; there was another example of a leading finisher in the older age group being speedier than his younger counterpart as Dave BEDWELL took M60 honours in 18:34 and in the M65 category race regular Arthur Daley of Gloucester Athletic Club was first home in 19:18.
There were 35 finishers from Bristol & West including several club newcomers. Readers are reminded that there is no race in December 2016 so the next (fourth) race in the series will be at Aztec West on Tuesday 31st January 2017 commencing at 7.30 p.m. A quick reminder that you can now enter on-line – including on the day of the race -so help those who organise the event if you can by pre-entering.
