|The first race of the 2016/2017 Aztec West Fast 5k series saw wins for Tom Mortimer from Stroud & District Athletic Club in 15:08 in the Men’s Race and Megan Brinley of Cheltenham Harriers in 17:52 in the Ladies Race. It was a cool, still night which was ideal for racing as 26 club members finished the race in a field of 122 runners.
Luke EVANS led the club runners home in second place in 15:17 to equal his PB from February 2016. Next home was Jarlath MCKENNA in third place showing no signs of his fine performance in the Great Bristol Half-Marathon as he clocked 15:18 to shave one second off his course PB. Rob STEWART was fourth in 15:44 to take 8 seconds off his PB. Josh MOODY had his introduction to the race with a top ten finish in ninth place in 16:14 and will no doubt be looking for a sub-16 clocking next time out. Andy SALMON finished twelfth in 16:27, while Maciej BIALOGONSKI continued on the comeback trail after his accident with fifteenth place in 16:34.
Next in were Will DAVIDSON (sixteenth in 16:37) and former club member Jamie McKee (seventeenth in 16:44). Neil KENNEDY finished twentieth in 16:49 a 34 second PB reflecting a lot of hard training over recent months. Peter BAINS was twenty-first in 16:57 in his first ever Aztec West Fast 5k. Henry SLY was twenty-third in 17:08 and according to Power of 10 this was Henry’s first Aztec West Fast 5k as well. Andy MALLOY and Ivan USENKO had a battle which Andy won finishing thirty-first in 17:42 with Ivan thirty-second in 17:44. Daryl PHILLIPS was close being finishing thirty-fifth in 17:49. There was also a big club battle just outside the top forty as Paul JEFFERSON was fortieth in 18:13, Dan SCHOFIELD was forty-second in 18: 22, Mark BURLEY was forty-third in 18:22, Charlie PANTLIN was forty-fourth in 18:25 and Fiona MARKS was forty-fifth in 18:27.
Peter CLARK was fifty-third in 18:59, Alex BANKS was sixtieth in 19:16, Imogen PECK was second club lady home in sixty-seventh place in 19:33, Jonathan GOODLAND was seventy-second in 19:59 and Alice DOGGRELL was third club lady in seventy-ninth place in 20:42. Vicky CATNACH made her club debut in eighty-eighth place in 21:43 with Tom BURGESS (second V65) in ninety-fifth place in 22:31.
The second race in the series will take place on Tuesday 25th October 2016 commencing at 7.15 p.m. at the usual venue.
