A much-improved team performance on Saturday 7th June 2014 in third place with several individual wins and PBs. Southampton won with 350 pts; Basingstoke 2nd with 346 and we finished with 324. Basingstoke & Southampton jointly lead the team standings with 15 match points with B & W in joint 3rd place with 11 match points. Well done guys. I will post the full results as soon as I get them.
Our best event was our clean sweep in the Pole Vault with Connell Macquisten (4 metres 60 centimetres) and Luke Bailey (4 metres 20 centimetres). Other wins came from Dan Studley (800 in a SB of 1:53.43); Charlie Maclean (Steeplechase in 9:07.60); Yannick Budd (110 metre hurdles in 14.34); Jack Cullinan (Hammer 40:98) and James Preston (Discus- 41:26). Welcome back James.
The epic runs by Theo Campbell (second in the 100 and 200 metres in 10.83 and 21.67) could not contain Basingstoke’s Showler-Davies. PBs by Adam Speake (3:55.24/1500) and Caspar Eliot (49.03/400 metres). The 4 x 400 metres team of Alex Fields (51.3), Alex Daley (50.2), Theo Campbell (47.4) and Caspar Eliot (48.5) are edging closer to the club record of 3:15.
The results show that we could have won this match with a little more depth in our sprinters and vertical jumpers. Once again illness, injury and international aspirations denied us a better all-round team performance. My thanks to all those who competed with distinction and effort and to those who gave them great support throughout a sunny afternoon.
Let’s win the next two matches at Derby on 5th July and 9th August at Bath. We have shown that we can do it (and we need to record two wins to stand any chance of promotion to Division 1 for next season)!
