Club Support Helps Bristol Schools Athletics Trials to Take Place

04 Jun

This was a message from Steve Bailey (The PE Leader at Redland Green School) to teachers in Bristol Secondary Schools about this morning’s Bristol Schools Athletics trials – “As you know Bristol Schools athletics is currently in transition mode. Ken Holmes and Peter Jakobek who have run Bristol athletics for the last 20-30 years have finally and deservedly stepped down and we are therefore looking towards the future. Thank you to Cherry Kraus and Bristol & West AA, who have in a very short time frame provided the opportunity for our athletes to trial for the Bristol team. The team will go on to compete in the Avon Championships on Saturday 14th June at Yate (10.30am – 4.00pm).”

I would like to personally thank Hilary Nash, who pulled things together for the club with Cherry. Hilary coordinated entries from 18 schools, allocated numbers, prepared the timetable and result cards and is producing the results. Mike Strange acted as Chief Timekeeper, Roger Brocklesby provided general support in various guises and Chris Elson promoted the club by handing out flyers and generally chatting to any talented athletes who weren’t yet affiliated to a club.

Peter Jones and Nicola Diamond were both there helping (not sure whether this was in their school role or as a parent volunteer). Fiona Leeming (Results Runner), Paul Owen (Starter’s Marksman) and Alastair Pitt (Assistent to the Clerk of the Course)  were definitely there as parent volunteers and by my reckoning that meant that about 50% of the officials were from the club. Thanks very much to everyone who rallied round (mostly at pretty short notice) the event couldn’t have taken place without your help.

Don’t forget if you finished in the top two earlier today (Wednesday 4th June 2014) or are a ranked athlete and was unable to attend or are in the intermediate or senior age groups then be sure that their school contacts Cherry Kraus to ensure they are selected for the Bristol Team to take part in the Avon Schools Championships.

Keith Brackstone reports (Timekeeper and Clerk of the Course on the day).
