Midland League – Results from Coventry – Saturday 4th May 2014

06 May

The 2014 Midland Track & Field League season got under way with a trip to Coventry and the team was very much a mix of youth and experience. As usual there was a good mix of Bristol & West and Yate & District athletes with a good contingent of mature distance athletes from Bristol & West. Often in league matches every point counts and Coventry’s competition on Saturday was no exception with a very tight result seeing the Bristol & Yate composite team edging home in second place by just two points.

Alex LEEMING-FROUDAKIS had a busy afternoon in the field winning the A shot putt with a throw of 12 metres 24 centimetres, finishing second in the B Discus with 26 metres 35 centimetres and third in the B Hammer with 19 metres and 79 centimetres. Matt SPICER threw 45 metres 70 centimetres for third place in the A Hammer. Adam WALL cleared 2 metres exactly for second place in the A High Jump, with new comer Shaun SCOTT finishing second in the B High Jump with a clearance of 1 metre 85 centimetres. Shaun won the A Pole Vault with a highest clearance of 2 Metres 60 centimetres. I am also led to believe that Adam WALL gave pole vaulting a go but despite clearing heights before and after the competition no heighted in the competition itself.

On the track Ross GRAINGER and Jerry HOGAN both did an 800/1,500 metre double with Ross finishing fifth in the A string in both races clocking 4:26.8 and 2:12.7 and Jerry was fourth in the B 800 metres in 2:26.2 and fifth in the B 1,500 metres in 4:49.9. Peter MOUNTAIN finished fifth in the B 5,000 metres in 19:06.2.

In the Women’s Team Gemma TINGAY was even busier in the throws than Alex had been for the men. Gemma was second in the A Shot Putt with a putt of 11 metres 37 centimetres, she finished second in the A Discus with a throw of 34 metres 86 centimetres, third in the B Hammer with 28 metres 20 centimetres and second in the A javelin with 36 metres 86 centimetres. Alyssa SMALL clocked 27.1 when finishing fourth in the A 200 metres. Grace COTTRELL won the A 100 metres hurdles in 15.4 and then took second in the A High Jump with a clearance at 1 metre 60 centimetres.

Vicky TESTER has only recently rejoined Bristol & West (as an other discipline member as she still runs for Westbury on the Road and Country) and gained good points with fourth in the A 800 metres in 2:28.6 and first in the A 1,500 metres in 5:13.0. In the first she was ably supported by Sarah Everitt who broke her 4 day old 800 PB with a 2:29.1 clocking before joining Julia BELYAVIN in the 3,000 metres where she won the B race in 11:04.6. Julia did the double in winning the B 1,500 metres in 5:36.1 and then taking the A 3,000 metres in 10:59.8. The ladies also helped to gain a point in the 4 x 400 metres where Sarah ran a sprightly 66.4 – she will be challenging Caroline Powell soon!
