Torbay on 1 March 2014 and the sun was shining but we were focused on the competition inside. As always the outcome depends on the teams performing well and hopefully better and more consistently than the other teams. The Avon teams are in the habit of winning at Torbay. In selecting the teams it was clear the girls’ team was strong but the boys team was an automatic choice from the five who competed at the trials. Two other lads were drafted in to complete the team. Aaron Reolizo (who competed last year as an Under-13 and was recommended by Dave Turner) and Gabriel Dos Santos.
As a team manager the 14 team members made it an easy and enjoyable day. The team spirit was terrific and when they were not competing they gathered as a unit to chat and recover from exertions. In brief the outcome was a win for both the boys and girls teams. The teams thereby qualifying for the National Final to be held at SportCity, Manchester on Sunday 6th April. Congratulations to all team members.
As well as a team event the competition incorporates an All-rounder Event and six athletes each compete in three events. The outcome was brilliant with Ada’ora Chigbo and Alfie Light coming first. Ada’ora won all her three events and this has only once before been done by an Avon athlete, Jade Ellans, who went on to the National Final where she finished joint 1st. Ada’ora’s 10.48m shot putt effort was further than the previous championship best set by Jade back in 2006. Ada’ora will miss the final so she will be sorely missed.
The table below shows an impressive set of individual All-rounder placings:
BOYS Points GIRLS Points
1st Alfie Light 134 1st Ada’ora Chigbo 150
2nd Alex Crofts 133 4th Abigail Roach 136
3rd Declan Walters 132 5th Sofie Anderson 130
4th Aaron Reolizo 130 6th Esther Leong 127
5th Harvey Flower 129 10th Emma Warinton 116
19th Gabriel Dos Santos 107 13th= Jess Dadds 114
In the individual events top three placings were achieved by:
Sofie Anderson Speed Bounce 93 1st
Ada’ora Chigbo 4 lap run 46.9 1st; Shot Putt 10.48m 1st; Standing Long Jump 2.31 1st
Abigail Roach 4 lap run 48.1 3rd; Speed Bounce 86 2nd;
Esther Leong Vertical Jump 54cms 3rd
Aaron Reolizo 2 lap run 20.7 1st=; Standing Long Jump 2.62m 1st;
Alex Crofts 2 lap run 20.7 1st=; Standing Triple Jump 7.74m 2nd
Declan Walters Speed Bounce 85 3rd
Alfie Light Shot Putt 11.06m 2nd
Harvey Flower Shot Putt 11.21m 1st
Sofie’s speed bounce effort was outstanding. Aaron and Alex sharing 1st place was remarkable.
The team result takes the four best individual scores and adds the points from the two relays. Michael Bakare and Rosie Harris played key roles in the 4 x 2 lap relays.
Esther and Ada’ora combined for the 8 lap paarlauf. From the half way point Esther pulled away from the field and Ada’ora extended the lead for a comfortable win. Rosie, Abigail, Sofie and Emma determined the running order and gave an impressive demonstration of how to pass the baton. Slick changes enabled them to pull away from the other teams for a very convincing win.
Harvey and Alfie combined for the paarlauf. To take advantage of Alfie’s very quick running they were persuaded to break with the norm of 2H, 2A, 2H +2A to run 2H, 2A, 1 ½H and 2 1/2A. The outcome was a fine second place. The final relay team was under instructions to set of fast with Aaron, then to Michael, Gabriel and finish with Alex. A totally dominant performance with the next team more than 50 metres adrift. A long, long way behind.
Thanks to Nick Crofts and also former team member Pippa Reilly who officiated at the event.
