The fourth race of the 2013-2014 Winter Series of the Pomphrey Sports 5k saw a win for Brett Halliwell of Stroud & District in 15:54. Brett was nearly half a minute clear of the field for a comfortable victory. Behind him Anthony Glover of Westbury Harriers finished runner-up in16:23 in front of a trio of Bristol & West athletes: Matt Krelle (third in 16:26), Jarlath McKenna (fourth in 16:33) and Ian Stuart (fifth in 16:42). Down in ninth place Brett’s elder brother Gregg made a return to racing finishing in 17:16.
The leading lady was Jessie Sanzo in 17:29 fresh (if that’s the right word) from her fourth place in the Midland Cross-Country Championships in fifteenth place overall. Not far behind (seventeenth in 17:44) was Emma D’Alton of Westbury Harriers with Sophie Voller (also from Westbury Harriers) completing the first three ladies in twenty-ninth place overall in 18:30. The first three ladies were all in the W35 category.
In the age groups Mal White (Westbury Harriers) was first M45 (fourteenth overall) in 17:28 getting the better of Andy Malloy (first M40 and sixteenth overall) in 17:38 (and also regular training partner from WISE Runners on a Wednesday night Jessie Sanzo). Dave Bedwell was first M55 in 18:10 and Dave Wintle of Great Western Runners was first M60 in 19:09. Sarah Everitt took W45 honours in forty-first place in 19:26.
First young athlete home was Joe Connors from Yate & District Athletic Club in thirty-fourth place in 19:05.
There were 101 finishers and it was good to see 28 Bristol & West runners supporting the club’s promotion plus 11 from Bristol University – despite the British Universities Cross-Country Championships looming this weekend.
As ever our thanks go to Chris Elson, Roger Brocklesby and the Team for staging the event. A full list of times and finishers can be found at the following link:
