Moorland Multi Terrain Race – Sunday 19th January 2014

A cold but sunny Sunday morning gave perfect running conditions but the fear was the ground was going to be a little wet.  A quick glance at the first corner into the field during the warm up confirmed it was going to be a sloppy race.

A speedy, splattery start and absence of stiles soon separated out the 173 runners as they then ran down pleasant country tracks, skied down the sides of hills, paddled through marshland and tried to make up time in the fields and villages.  All in the peace and quiet of the countryside under two motorways.

Whilst the eventual winner Josh shot off like a rocket, a few of us stayed within sight of him.  Jim Plunkett-Cole worked his way through the group to eventually settle into second place.  A year of 10k every day has certainly helped his running.   A pack of the first 10 runners separated away and from then on there were very few changes of position up at the front.  About a mile from the finish I thought I was going to be able to take the first Bristol & West home position away from Tom Galvin after he held a gate open for me so I was on his heels. Unfortunately a sudden vitality came over him and he just went faster and faster (he was kind enough to put this down to well studded shoes).  With the finish hill in sight it was just a short, exhausting slither upwards, along and ever upwards to the relief of the final woodland home stretch.  Josh came home in a great sub 41 minutes (although he does have at least a good 15 years on me) and Bristol came in with some great packing taking third, fourth & fifth (Tom Galvin, Paul Jefferson and Steve Swan respectively).  Steve crossed the line looking resplendent in his red and white vest top although due to a nose bleed which he refused to stop for, his shirt had an additional vertical red streak.

Unfortunately TACH don’t give team prizes for this race unlike their summer series so Bristol & West lost out even though their nearest rivals (Westbury) only had two runners home by the time our fourth arrived.  Still, it’s looking good for the Summer Series.  At least a couple more runners weren’t able to make this race so by May we should have such a strong team that we’ll be fighting to be part of the first 4 home and I don’t have to hear Southville shouting about their victory.  As a fairly long time runner in the TACH races, it’s nice to see Bristol & West being able to be considered for the team prize (at least 4 runners) and then dominating it is fantastic.

The usual glut of alcohol was on offer and bottles went to Tom Galvin, Paul Jefferson, Steven Swan and Emma Withers for their placing in their age categories.  Next TACH off road race is 1st May in Wrington, entry opens in February.

There was also a Moorland Mini Terrain run on the same day for under 16s.  Unfortunately it occurred whilst the seniors were racing so I don’t have any report but two participants from Bristol & West took part, Otto Kingston and Sadie Gledson, third and twenty-third respectively and second and fourth in their age categories.  Two new future mud lovers to continue Bristol & West’s involvement with off road racing.
