With some 24 members running the Slog, 36 doing the parkruns, athletes recovering from last week’s National relays, and the usual crop of illness, injury & family commitments, the Gwent League at Bridgend was never going to be easy, but there were a good number of highlights. In the Senior Men, Charlie MacLean strode majestically to victory by a large margin. I heard someone say, it shouldn’t be allowed. He did look that relaxed and to be enjoying the taste of victory! Next up were Ben Robinson and super-vet Alec Woods, both of whom had superlative runs with 13th and 19th place respectively. Matt Krelle 31st and Peter Gandon, 97th completed the men’s ‘A’ team.
Not to be outdone by Charlie, Tom Watson’s other charge, Ben Westhenry, won the U20 men’s race, while Miranda Sadler looked comfortable taking fifth place in the U20 ladies.
Charlotte Green made a brave attempt to lead our Senior ladies but had me really worried when I saw her after she pulled out. It was left to Grace France to lead our ladies home in 8th place followed by Julia Belyavin suffering no ill effects from her recent marathon PB in 15th. Sarah Everitt, Clare Jolliffe & Helen Newberry in 31st, 32nd & 34th completed the ladies A team with both Sarah & Clare pleased with their run, while Helen felt she’d overcooked the start. My guess is that the ladies still have the overall lead in the competition; but that we’ll need everyone out at Bath on Sunday 8th Dec, so please ladies note the date!
