The first of the Gwent League fixtures saw the Under-13 girls heading off to Pontypool Park in the Usk Valley. The day started off mild and sunny but the venue did not look like any cross country venue we had experienced before! There were extreme hills and beautiful views. The team comprised experienced stalwarts in the form of Isobel Leeming and Emily Moore who had both competed last year in the Gwent League. The girls were joined by relative newcomers Nancy Dineen and twins Abigail and Jessica White. All were nervous and dreading the hills but when gun went off the Bristol and West girls were at the front. Isobel led the field for the first loop followed by Nancy with Emily, Abigail and Jessica not far behind. The second loop was ridiculously hard with a long climb up a steep hill through the woods followed by a cantor around the top with lovely views and then downhill at breakneck speed to finish on the sports field. Nancy was chasing down Isobel in the final stretch to finish 14th and 13th respectively. They both received Gwent League Golden Jubilee medals for finishing in the top 20. Emily finished in 34th place with Jessica closely behind in 37th and Abigail in 40th. The White sisters did extremely well on their debut on such a tough course and don’t seem at all put off! The girls were also lucky enough to miss the horrendous rain that arrived in time for the Senior Women’s race. Final team positions are not yet known but Dave, Paul and Hen are very proud of their team.
