Great Running in the Avon County Open Meeting – Tuesday 16th July 2013

17 Jul

Maybe it was some judiciously placed emails to coaches or maybe it was the sunshine but there were some good fields at last night’s (Tuesday 16th July 2013) Avon County Open Meeting at the Kip Keino Athletic Stadium at Stoke Gifford and those fields produced some excellent performances.

The event saw a first for the stadium with Tom Curr acting as a pace-maker in the senior men’s 800 metres as Rich PETERS (Bristol & West) and several of Tom’s Stroud and District colleagues sought fast times. Although Rich might have been disappointed the crowd weren’t as they saw him clock 1:49.8 to set a new stadium record. Behind him Will Paulson (Stroud) clocked a pretty pacey 1:52.3 finishing as runner-up.

There were 23 in the 3,000 metres and the Club Endurance Team Manager had been encouraging some of the club’s faster ladies to sign up for the race as several wanted to test their current fitness levels and Women’s Team Captain Charlotte Green was looking for a PB. The race was won by Joe Dalgliesh from Stroud in 8:59.3 after a race-long battle with Michael Towler of Avon Valley Runners. Amongst the ladies, who were in the same race, Kate GOODHEAD took the honours clocking 9:52.1 from Jessie SANZO 10:02.3 and revelation of the night Charlotte GREEN whose 10:11.4 clocking made her 11:03 PB the history it was. All three finishing in front of their male counterparts except third-placer Will CHRISTOFI who recorded 9:21.4.

Elsewhere Chris Stone ran a quick 100/200 metre double in 10.6/21.9 and there was a four second PB from Eloise BROWNE in the girl’s 800 metres with 2:26.5. [Dave Taylor who was there helping was pleased to see his two athletes both record PBs].

There were several of the club’s lady throwers in action – although generally entries were fairly low in the field events – with Gemma TINGAY particularly active throwing in all 3 events. Nice to see James PRESTON throwing the discus and shot as well – let’s hope he will be available for the British Athletics League final event at the same venue on Saturday 3rd August 2013.

The club certainly did its part supporting the County Association and a big thank you to all of those who officiated and volunteered to help in other ways.
