Day 2 of the Midland Championships held at Alexander Stadium on Sunday 23 June 2013 saw 8 club athletes in action. I am advised that the conditions at Birmingham were similar to those at Gateshead for those of you who watched the European Team Championships on the second day – so there were some good performances taking that into account. Pride of place must go to Charlotte GREEN who took the women’s 2,000 metres steeplechase title with a display of committed front running. Her time of 7:19.2 was a PB and lifts her to twelfth in the UK rankings at the event. This was a great confidence boost ahead of her 3,000 metre steeplechase debut at the BMC Grand Prix at Watford this Sunday.
It was our jumpers who also finished in the medals with high jumpers Hayley PITMAN second in the Senior Women’s event with a clearance at 1 metre 65 centimetres; a height matched by Amelia HEMPLEMAN-ADAMS in the under-20 women’s high jump when also taking silver. So that was three silver medals for Joy Bray’s squad over the weekend. In the Men’s Pole Vault Luke Bailey took the silver medal with a clearance at 4 metres 20 centimetres and in the under-20 Men’s Long Jump James DIAMOND finished second with a longest jump of 6 metres 27 centimetres.
The club had three competitors in the Senior Men’s 200 metres with Romaine HYMAN finishing fifth in Heat 3 clocking 23.2 just in front of Alastair ABRAMS setting aside his coaching duties for once to clock 23.3 for seventh place in the same heat. Earlier in Heat 1 Alex Fields had run 23.4 for sixth place.
