Avon Schools – Saturday 8th June 2013

There were some great performances from club members running for the local schools teams in the Avon Schools Championships held at Yate Outdoor Sports Centre on Saturday 8th June 2013.

New member Bruce D’SILVA (Fairfield School) won the Minor Boys 100 metres in 13.48 with Miles THOMAS (QEH) fifth in 14.03. In the Junior Boys 100 metres Will HINES (Redland Green) was equal first in 12.50. Reuben WILMSHURST (Cathedral School) was second in the Junior Boys 800 metres in 2:15.08 in what must have been one of the closest finishes of the day as just 7 hundredths of a second separated the first three. There was no need for the photo finish equipment in the Junior Boys 1,500 metres where Harry LEEMING (Clifton College) was a clear winner by over 7 seconds – his time 4:28.27. In third place Keiron DUNKLEY (Bristol Brunel Academy) clocked 4:40.39.

There were some good performances in the field in the Junior Boy’s age group: Tobi ELEGBEDE (St Mary Redcliffe & Temple) finished third in the long jump with a jump of 5 metres 16 centimetres. Kurt CAMERON, competing for the Grange School in South Gloucestershire) won the pole vault with a clearance at 2 metres 60 centimetres and then cleared 1 metre 50 centimetres without the aid of a pole for fifth place as a wild card entry in the high jump. To show his long term potential as a multi-eventer Kurt also finished sixth in the javelin with a throw of 28 metres 27 centimetres. In the same event Tom KRAUSE (QEH) threw 31 metres 86 centimetres for third place – a far cry from his usual endurance running discipline. Barney TAYLOR (Bristol Grammar School) finished fourth in the Discus with a throw of 23 metres 81 centimetres and was seventh in the shot putt with a throw of 9 metres 12 centimetres.

In the Intermediate Boys age group Lucas REGAZZO (Clifton College) was second equal in the 80 metres hurdles in 16.40 before clocking 61.94 in the 400 metre hurdles where he was the sole competitor. There was a show of club strength in both the 200 and 800 metre races at this age group. In the 200 metres Freddie OWSLEY (Clifton College) was a clear winner clocking 23.47. Behind him Tomas GOODMAN (third in 24.95) and Khan FAGAN (fifth in 25.30) both flew the flag for City Academy Bristol. Tomas also jumped 11 metres 75 centimetres for fourth place in the triple jump. New club member Jack YEOMAN threw 39 metres 14 centimetres to finish runner-up in the Javelin.

In the Senior Boys age group Chris STONE (City of Bristol College) did the 100/200 metre double recording English Schools standards in both races with 10.91 in the 100 metres and 21.90 in the 200 metres to keep his excellent season going. Elliot PRENDERGAST (Cotham) was runner-up in the 100 metres in 11.42.

In the Girl’s events Isobel LEEMING (Clifton College) finished second in the Minor Girls 800 metres in 2:41.82 with Emily MOORE (St Mary Redcliffe and Temple) fourth in 2:44.01.  In the Junior age group there was a strong club presence with Kinnie SONGU (Fairfield) winning the 100 metres in 13.07, with Danielle PRENDERGAST (Fairfield) finishing sixth in 14.06 and Lauren IPINSON (Bristol Cathedral School) finishing eighth in 14.67. There was another club winner in the 200 metres where Ella FALK (Fairfield) took the race in 27.14. Danielle PRENDERGAST (Fairfield) finished seventh in 30.13. Eloise BROWN (Colston College) finished second in the 1,500 metres in 5:07.24. Sam BARREETT (Colston Girls) won the 75 metre hurdles in 12.29; a race in which Jade STALLARD (Orchard Academy) finished sixth in 13.99. Sam also finished second in the long jump with a jump of 4 metres 59 centimetres and second in the high jump (where she was a wild card entry) with a clearance of 1 metre 45 centimetres. Fenella FORD (Colston College) cleared 1 metre 40 centimetres for fourth place. Catherine CLAYTON (Colston College) won the Discus with a throw of 25 metres 14 centimetres and was fourth in the shot putt with 7 metres 59 centimetres.

In the intermediate girls Anicia SKEATES (St Bede’s) won the 80 metre hurdles in 12.46 and was second in the 200 metres in 26.69. In the 100 metres Yemma SONGU (Fairfield) finished second in 12.8 with Natasha JONES in fourth place in 13.9. Jo TAYLOR (Badminton School) was second in the 800 metres in 2:25.18. In the field Rownita MARSTON (Speedwell) won the shot with a putt of 9 metres 93 centimetres.

In the senior age group Alyssa SMALL (St Mary Redcliffe) was third in the 100 metres in 13.10 and second in the 200 metres in 26.70. Maria JONES (Colston College) won the 800 metres in 2:33.26) and Miranda SADLER (Bristol Grammar School) took the 1,500 metre title in 4:51.11.

Congratulations to all of our athletes on some great performances: we wish them well at the South-West Schools at Exeter on Saturday 15th June and at the English Schools at Alexander Stadium on Friday/Saturday 5th and 6th July 2013.
