It was the turn of Bristol University to provide the winner of the Pomphrey Sports 5k on Tuesday 28th May 2013 as John Ashcroft made a return to racing following a lay off with an ankle injury which he sustained in October 2012. John’s winning time was 16:01. Behind him fellow student and University triathlete Alex Matchett took the runners-up position in 16:56, with the home club’s Matt Krelle third in 17:26. Jacob Hayes of Bitton Road Runners took the M40 prize in fifth place overall and must have been chased hard by Mal White (M45) of Westbury showing no after effects from his run in the BUPA 10k in London the day before where he recorded 36 minutes for 10k. Jacob’s time was 17:38 while Mal recorded 17:45. David Vaudin of Team Bath took the M55 award in eleventh place in 18.17, while Dave Wintle of Great Western Runners was a clear M60 winner in sixteenth place in 19:15.
Katie Synge from Westbury was the Women’s winner in fourteenth place in 18:58 with Lizzie Smith, also of Westbury, runner-up in 19:29. Lucy Ellis of Great Western Runners was third lady in 20:22.
Numbers were again down with only 58 finishers compared to the 73 finishers in April’s race and the club entries these days seem to be limited to runners from the Whitehall and WISE Runners groups rather than the club at large. Chris and Roger put a lot of effort into staging this series of races and it would be great for club athletes in general to give them more support by turning out on a more regular basis.
