The Bristol & West/Yate Composite got off to a flying start in the Midland League Division 2 Match at Yate on Saturday 18th May 2013 with a resounding team win. There were some great individual performances by club athletes and Roger Brocklesby, Charlotte Green and the representatives from Yate & District Athletic Club are to be congratulated on giving the team such momentum.
Elliot PRENDERGAST finished second in the ‘A’ 100 metres in 11.33 for a season’s best. In the Women’s 100 metres Yemma SONGU was sixth in the ‘A’ string in 12.9, with Alyssa SMALL clocking the same time for second in the ‘B’ string.
In the 200 Metres Matt LATTIBEAUDIERE was third in the ‘B’ string in a PB of 24.0. Rebecca COURTENAY finished fifth in the ‘A’ string in 27.0 and Alyssa SMALL was third in the ‘B’ string with a PB of 26.9. In the 400 metres Caroline POWELL was second in the ‘B’ string in 63.5
Cy Knibb’s duo both took second in the 800 metres with Andrew DEAN-YOUNG clocking 1:58.7 in the ‘A’ race and Will HARTLEY 2:01.8 in the ‘B’ Race. There were two second places in the Women’s 800 metres where Joanne Taylor clocked 2:23.4 and Charlotte GREEN recorded 2:27.5
There were more second places in the 1,500s where Daniel EDMUND ran 4:03.8 in the ‘A’ string Men’s Race and Georgie SALMON ran 4:51.4 – both recording PBs.
Bristol & West athletes filled all the slots in the endurance events and the Keith Brackstone coached duo of Jessie SANZO and Anna BURTON took first place in the ‘A’ and ‘B’ string in the women’s 3,000 metres in 10:14.5 and 10:22.7 respectively. Jessie in her first ever track race and Anna in only her second. In the Men’s 5,000 metres Will RUSSELL was third in the ‘A’ string in 16:16.5 in his first ever track race. Huw JONES was fourth in the ‘B’ string in 17:08.8 for a PB.
Rebecca COURTENAY won the ‘B’ string 100 metre hurdles in 17.5 and John BRIERLY took the honours in the ‘A’ string 110 metres hurdles in 17.2 – just outside his PB. John made it a double by taking the ‘A’ string 400 metre hurdles in 57.6. Charlotte GREEN ran a big PB to take the ‘B’ string Women’s 400 metre hurdles.
In the relays the composite men’s team were second in the 4 x 100 metres (45.0) but took the women’s 4 x 100 metres (50.5). In the 4 x 400 metres the positions were reversed with the men taking their race in 3:22.8 and the women coming second in 4:15.3.
Adam WALL won the high jump on count back with a clearance of 2 metres just one centimetre short of his PB. Amelia HEMPLEMAN-ADAMS made it a club double as she took the women’s ‘A’ string with a clearance at 1 metre 68 centimetres.
The Pole Vault was a good event for the club with Will HARTLEY taking the ‘A’ string with a PB clearance at 3 metres 40 centimetres. Elise GAUNTLETT won the women’s ‘A’ string with a PB clearance at 3 metres 26 centimetres and Rocio MOYA won the ‘B’ string – also with a PB clearance at 2 metres 40 centimetres.
James DIAMOND was fourth in the ‘A’ string long jump with a season’s best jump of 6 metres 25 centimetres and had a couple of longer jumps that were narrow fouls – so more to come from James. The women’s long jump saw club jumpers take both ‘A’ and ‘B’ strings with Madison THOMAS jumping 5 metres 31 centimetres and Roseanne MACKAY jumping 4 metres 76 centimetres. Roseanne added a second place in the triple jump ‘A’ string with a jump of 10 metres 55 centimetres. Paul WESTON was again active jumping 11 metres 57 centimetres to take the ‘B’ string triple jump.
James PRESTON threw 12 metres 92 centimetres to take second place in the Men’s ‘A’ string shot putt. Gary BARRETT was fourth in the ‘B’ string with 7 metres 45 centimetres. Alice GROSJEAN won the women’s ‘A’ shot with a throw of 10 metres 45 centimetres (a PB) and Madison THOMAS was second in the ‘B’ string with a throw of 8 metres 34 centimetres.
In the discus Gary BARRETT was fourth in the ‘A’ string with a throw of 30 metres 31 centimetres. Alice GROSJEAN and Rocio MOYA did the double in the women’s discus: Alice throwing 33 metres 50 centimetres and Rocio 23 metres 10 centimetres.
Matt SPICER took the Men’s Hammer ‘A’ string with a throw of 47 metres 76 centimetres; Gary BARRETT was fifth in the ‘B’ string with a throw of 15 metres 83 centimetres. Christina JONES produced one of the performances of the day to launch her hammer out 59 metres 25 centimetres for a PB and a club record. Well done Christina!
All-in-all a great start to the Midland Track and Field League – there are areas we can still strengthen and everyone is asked to let Team Manager Roger Brocklesby know their availability for the second fixture to be held at Birmingham University on Sunday 9th June 2013. The third fixture will be held at Stoke on Sunday 7th July 2013 with the final fixture at Gloucester on Saturday 10th |August 2013.
