The first race in the 2013 Summer Series of Pomphrey Sports 5k races got under way on Tuesday 30th April 2013 at the usual venue. A bright and sunny day gave way to a cool dry evening so it was disappointing that a field of only 73 completed the course. Indeed as well as numbers the standard at the front wasn’t what it has been in recent years with the overall winner being Vet 40 Jacob Hayes from Bitton Road Runners in a time of 16:57. There have been races where the first lady has been just outside 17 minutes. Moreover Jacob’s was a clear victory as second-placer Nick Taviner of host club Bristol & West was 22 seconds behind in 17:19. Miles Chandler was a clear third in 17:24 as he finished third overall and first under-17. Mal White of Westbury Harriers showed the benefit of training with WISE Runners on Wednesday nights as he finished 4th in 17:38. Jenny Carter of Team Bath was first lady in 18:01 as she finished ninth overall, whilst behind her Anna Burton took her course PB down to 18:17 from 18:23 as she finished 14th overall and second senior lady. Anna was one second behind Dave Bedwell who took the V55 top slot in 18:16.
A number of the ‘usual suspects’ were missing – presumably saving themselves for this Sunday’s Bristol 10k. Hopefully we will see them back for the second race in the series on Tuesday 28th May 2013. Full results from last night can be found at:
