Avon League – First Match results – Sunday 21st April 2013

If the cold and windy conditions on Sunday 21st April 2013 kept athletes away it was a blessing in disguise as over 500 athletes took part (apparently) and the programme was cut short having already over-run by 75 minutes. A summary of club results plus details of Grade 1 performances and new Avon Track & Field Records are available at http://www.bristolandwestac.org/downloads/track-and-field-competitions/avon-league/.

The Performance of the Day from a Bristol & West perspective was a new League Record in the Senior Men’s 200 metres where Chris Stone carried his good indoor form outdoors to record 21.30 taking two-tenths off the previous record. Chris also took the 100 metres in 10.95. This was one of five new league records – but the only one set by a Bristol & West athlete.

Not far behind Chris’ performance was Freddie Owsley’s Junior Men’s 400 metres where his 50.40 was one of seven Grade 1 performances and one of two from the club (the other being Chris’ 200 metres). There were several other fine performances with 11 event winners in addition to the two listed above.

There was an under-11 75 metres double with Anais Taylor taking the girls race in 11.64 and Alex Yfimcev the Boy’s race in 11.30. The under-11 Boys also took the 4 x 50 metres relay. Isabella Parselle won the under-15 Girl’s 300 metres in 44.60. Kieron Dunkley ran a fine 800 metres to win the under-15 Boy’s race in 2:24.6. In the field in the under-15 Boy’s Oluwatobi Elegbede won the Long Jump with 4 metres 72 centimetres, while Kurt Cameron took the Pole Vault with a clearance at 2 metres 42 centimetres.

Lucas Regazzo won the under-17 Men’s 100 hurdles in 16.28. At the longer events some of the more experienced members of the club showed they are still a force to be reckoned with locally as Georgie Salmon took the Senior Women’s 1,500 metres in 4:54.8, while Jerry Hogan returned to racing with a win in the Vets 3,000 metres in 10:20.54.

Some great individual performances but it would be nice to have greater numbers out for the second Avon League Match to be held on Sunday 19th May 2013.

Mention must be made of the volunteers from the club who helped officiate both in the field and on the track – with Mike and Carol Strange acting as Chief Timekeeper and a Track Judge respectively – which involved then spending 7 hours each on their respective sets of steps!
