Avon Schools’ teams performed with distinction at the 2013 UK Sportshall Finals. With all 4 teams winning South-West titles and being the only county to have all 4 teams at the Final the scene was set for a wonderful day.
Following their win at the South-West the under-13 Boys team underwent significant personnel changes with injury and unavailability due to holidays over the Easter Holidays. In addition a significant injury to Team Captain Will Hines meant he was only 80% fit.
Despite all this the team achieved a magnificent 2nd place in the 12 team final. Will Hines (Redland Green) who performed miracles at Torbay to help the team qualify struggled through his heat in 4th place (22.6) and then jumped 56 centimetres in the Vertical jump to secure 9th place of 24, a great effort.
Individual Bronze medals were achieved by the magnificent Michael Kohler Barnes (Redland Green) in the 6 lap with 1 minute 17.0 seconds winning his heat, and versatile Josh Bagnall Green (Brimsham Green) in the Vertical jump with 60 centimetres. Top 6 finishers are always good and the brilliant Adam Millward (Clevedon) took a great 4th place in the 2 lap with 21.9 three tenths of a second quicker than his winning heat time. Then Ben Lewis (Priory) did the same in the 4 lap race running out of his skin to take 4th place in 47.5 a full second quicker than his heat time. With Lucas Mortimer (Backwell) 5th in the Triple Jump with 7 metres 13 centimetres backed up by Alex Croft (Sidcot) in 9th with 7 metres 03 centimetres good points were achieved.
The 4 x 1 lap Relay provided a Gold medal with quartet of newcomer Jed Langley Stevens (Wellsway) a revelation Josh Bagnall Green (Brimsham Green), Lucas Mortimer (Backwell) and late call up Jake Middleton (Priory) winning a stunning heat and then followed this up with an equally impressive Final win. Jed then stepped forward to replace the injured Will Hines in the 4 x 2 lap relay and the order changed to suit each runner. In the heat the impressive Adam Millward ran a brilliant leg to put the team in front and good baton changing saw the team home first in their heat.
The Final again saw excellent baton work and another great run from all 4 boys took them to a wonderful silver medal beaten by Hertfordshire whose last runner was exceptional; both teams were well ahead of 3rd place. Adam Sinwell (Redland Green) Liam Brailsford (Henbury) and Anton Mills a last minute replacement in the High Jump) and Josh Dunstan (Brislington Enterprise College) winner of an extra 2 lap race all excelled to deliver a surprise yet well deserved Team 2nd place.
The Under-13 Girls finished in 8th place with Bronze medals won by Nina Nemi (Colston Girls) in the Vertical jump with 61 centimetres, the excellent Isabella Parselle (Clevedon) in the 6 lap with 1 minute 18.6 who gave everything in her heat (and also achieved a PB shot putt with 7 metres 55 centimetres), and the 4 x 2 lap Relay team.
In this event Anna Loughlin (Colston Girls) led off keeping the team in touch and then Esther Leong and Emma Bakare (Backwell) stormed through to hand over to Rosie Harris (Katharine Lady Berkeley) who finished off in style to win their heat. An even faster Final saw a similar pattern with Emma and Rosie closing on 2nd place earning an excellent Bronze medal.
Sadly in the 4 x 1 lap relay the baton hit the floor in the heat and the chance had gone for a hoped for high place. Top finishers included Rosie Harris (Katharine Lady Berkeley) in the 2 lap in 22.8 in 6th place quicker than she ran in the heat and Esther Leong (Backwell) 9th in the same event in 23.1. Esther also achieved a magnificent PB in the long jump with 2 metres 31 centimetres for 5th place.
Year 7 student Emma Bakare was a little unlucky in the triple Jump finishing 4th with the same distance as the 3rd place 7 metres 10 centimetres, having fallen backwards on 2 attempts in the competition. It was though a superb PB. In the same event Anna Loughlin (Colston Green) another Year 7 jumped to a PB of 6 metres 23 centimetres.
Olivia Furey (RG) achieved a great 8th place in the 4 lap with 50.7 and Hannah Dyer (John Cabot) a wonderful 12th place of the 24 competitors in the 6 lap with 1 minute 22.0 seconds. Millie Weeks (John Cabot) had a great Shot competition with a PB 8 metres 09 centimetres.
Leah Woodman (Priory) and Jasmine Nolan Kemp (Hayesfield) jumped to their best in the high jump whilst the team were well supported by reserves Isobel Murray () and Sarah Wilkinson (Hayesfield) both jumping well in the Triple Jump.
Ex County sports Hall athlete Jake Fisher travelled all the way from London where he is studying to help team manage the Boys team. His help and his experience were invaluable.
A huge well done to all the team and also to all the parents and supporters who have supported in so many ways throughout the competitions. You were great and it was a magnificent day.
All the team will now receive certificates and a small memento of their day at the UK 2013 Final.
