UKA Youth Development League (Under-17/Under-20) 2013

The UKA Youth Development League (YDL) is an inter-club team competition for Under-17 and Under-20 athletes, replacing the NYAL & NJAL leagues. Five of the clubs within the Avon area (Bristol & West, Mendip, North Somerset, Team Bath and Yate & District) have joined together to form a composite team called Team Avon.

Based on the success of last season Team Avon is competing in the Midland Premier 1 Division in 2013.  This means athletes will have the opportunity to compete at a high standard against athletes from Birchfield Harriers, Cheltenham Harriers, Cardiff AC, Rugby & Northants AC and Swansea Harriers.

For each event Team Avon is allowed to enter two athletes in each Under-20 event and one athlete in an Under-17 event. Under-17 athletes can compete in Under-20 events, so essentially we can enter 3 athletes for each event as long as one of them is Under-17. There is also a guest race for a further 3 athletes in the 100 metres.

Athletes must be first claim members of their clubs to be eligible to compete for Team Avon.

The four league matches for 2013 are as follows:

29th April 2013 – Birmingham (Alexander Stadium)

2nd June 2013 – Rugby

30th June 2013 – Cheltenham

28th July 2013 – Cardiff

Plus the National Final in Birmingham on 8th September 2013 (if the team does well enough) and a chance to compete in Europe.

Team Avon Team Managers believe that Team Avon can make the final. This is an ambitious target, but they think they can do it!  The five clubs involved have the athletic talent in Avon to win our division but they must have the commitment of all the eligible athletes and the support of your coaches and parents to prioritise this league over other events.

TEAM SELECTION: Rachael Fisher (women) & Sandra Woodman (men) select the team two weeks in advance of the competition so it is vital that you complete an availability form and return it to them with your current PBs for your preferred events, and keep them advised of new PBs.

Given that their aim is to score as many points in each event to maximise the team’s chance of reaching the finals, selection will largely be based on recent performances (as recorded on Power of Ten), but they will also seek to give as many athletes as possible the chance to compete and ensure they have sufficient athletes present to be able to field relay teams.

Team selections will be published by email, and athletes are expected to confirm receipt to the Team Managers.

The first match is at Birmingham and a coach is organised for the team (£5 per head; officials travel free). Please make sure you return your form to the appropriate manager in good time to be considered for team selection.
