Ashton Court Parkrun – Saturday 26th January 2013

After last week’s cancellation 184 parkrunners turned up at Ashton Court on a sunny and frosty morning. The lower parts of the course were in good condition, albeit with some icy patches. The upper section on the plateau was in what was described in the pre-race briefing as a “sheet” condition, with most of the gravel track still covered in ice.

It was decided to delay the start by about 15 minutes, to make some minor adjustments to the course. This consisted of removing the top section of track through the trees to the turnaround point. This was compensated for by moving the start and finish back towards the mansion.

As a result of the conditions, it was a case of finding the best ground with many runners opting for the grass verges particularly on the plateau.

The conditions did not stop some excellent results from being achieved, particularly in that elite and exclusive age group the VM55-59 (no bias here folks); with Rich Kenington and Paul Burgess both achieving PBs. Rich got his third successive PB and Paul Burgess, who broke an 8 month PB duck three weeks ago, improved by almost a minute.

The only other PB was achieved by Barry Mills on his second parkrun. Barry only started running last year, so has shown what can be achieved with regular training and application, not forgetting the Elson factor on a Monday night.

After much deliberation the Performance of the Week goes to Paul Burgess, another Whitehall regular, now beginning to reap some reward for his efforts.

Other highlights were Tracy Allan taking first place in the ladies’ run and Bristol and West taking five out of the first six positions in the VW50-54 category.

A big thank you today must go to Geoff, his team and all the volunteers for their work on the day. As previously mentioned, the start was delayed and the course adjusted, which only prolonged the time the marshals were out on the course.
