Track & Field Bulletin – 7th January 2013

This report was intended to cover as its primary target the South West Indoor (Junior) Championships in Cardiff where we believe we had in the order of 30 athletes competing.   However I think in view of the messed up situation on results we should review the rest of the Indoor scene rather than wait forever.  This is a pity as the representation of Young Athletes from the Club was overwhelming and the number of South West medalists was outstanding.  It shows that we now have the quality and depth to hold our corner in any summer YA team competition.  The future looks rosy.

Looking back to 23rd December 2012 there was an interesting indoor competition at Bath involving Pole Vault & Shot.  Most significant was the return to competition of our wonderful International Lucy BRYAN.  After a season in 2012 ruined by injury Lucy emerged with a great vault of 4.00 metres to win this low key competition.  Also competing were Martin DAVIES who vaulted 3.18 metres (not bad for an old ‘un) and Higher Competition Member Alice GROSJEAN and old member Bruce HOLDEN who threw the Shot 10.09 metres & 12.35 respectively.

Also from Bath on our TV screens over Christmas we saw the resurrection of an old favourite programme in ‘Superstars’  More relevant to B&W we saw Coach Ken HOLMES featured in commentary and on screen in the Javelin event.  Ken boasts to have taught Mo FARAH to throw the Javelin in two easy lessons and Mo showed Ken’s worth to come 2nd in the event.  Well done Ken and from TV most people noted your new slim line look (who says TV adds 7 lbs to one’s appearance – or perhaps it did and Ken is even slimmer than portrayed!).

In the Christmas edition of Athletics Weekly we saw a feature on ‘National Merit Rankings’ which is a rating by experts of the UK top performers on a win / loss basis.  We applaud Claire HALLISSEY for her top (= number 1) Ranking at the Marathon.  This was in recognition of her London Marathon performance and subsequent selection for the Olympic Games.   David BISHOP featured well principally for performances in the USA, Emily DIAMOND’s ranking reflected her selection at 400 metres to the Olympic Team and Lucy BRYAN’s indicated where she could have been if her season had not been ruined by injury.  The full list was :-  1, Marathon – Claire HALLISSEY; 7, 1,500m – David BISHOP; 8, 400m  – Emily DIAMOND; 8, Pole Vault – Lucy BRYAN; 12, 200m – Emily DIAMOND; 12, 3k Steeplechase – Charlie MACLEAN; 12, 10 Miles/ Half Marathon – Claire HALLISSEY.  Our congratulations to each of these Bristol & West athletes who are at the forefront of UK Athletics.

Back to this past week-end there were indoor competitions ‘with results’ at Sheffield and Eton.  At Sheffield we saw Scott DAVIE in the England Athletics Multi-Event competition where he finished 21st with 3,985 points.  Amongst these were some fairly respectable performances: – Long Jump – 5.98; 60H – 9.75; PV – 3.97; 60 – 7.84; SP – 8.26; HJ – 1.65; 1,000m – 2:55.22.  It is always good from a club point of view to see athletes covering multi-events just in case we need to cover gaps in a league team.

At the same venue Steve MITCHELL performed in the highly competitive BMC Indoor meet and produced a very excellent time of 8:34.36.  As I said this was a highly competitive race and Steve had to settle for 9th which I know he won’t be pleased with.  Remember it only January Steve and the real season does not start until May.

At Eton the WSE&H Winter Series continued with just 3 B&W athletes competing.  Greg SMITH was chasing that sub-7 second barrier after just missing out at Cardiff but somehow it will still remain illusive after he won both of his races in 7.07 & 7.11.  Greg has of course done 6.9 in the past but we won’t talk about that as it was when he was with Yate.  Khan FAGAN (U17) & Matty LATIBEAUDIERE (U20) Both improved their PBs with 7.77 & 7.84 and 8.00 & 8.02 respectively.

When Cardiff sorts itself out I will append a supplementary report but watch out for some great runs, jumps and throws  from Anicia SKEATES, Tomas GOODMAN, Samantha BARRETT, Nikki FORTUNE, Yemma SONGU, Kinnie SONGU, Kurt CAMERON and others yet unknown.
