The third in the Pomphrey Sports 5k Winter Series was held on a dry night that was a bit breezy and certainly had a bit of wind-chill in the air. Steve Mitchell (Bristol & West Athletic Club) aimed to put his exploits on the mud at Liverpool behind him and took off from the start under instructions to have a hard tempo run on the road. Coming home in 15.18 he was well clear of Duncan Birtwistle (Bristol University) who finished runner up in 17.01. Duncan will have been frustrated not to have broken 17 minutes for the first time but will be pleased to have run so much quicker than his 17.50 clocking back in June 2011. A testament to Chris Elson’s Coombe Dingle sessions. The third finisher was Robin Phillips of Westbury Harriers in 17.13 and Robin was delighted to reduce his ‘Bridge Inn’ PB from 17.36. With a 17.15 clocking Mark Edwards (Bristol & West/Bristol University) took fourth place just outside his October time of 17.03. Robin Lane of Bristol University completed the first five as he recorded 17.31 to shave 35 seconds off last month’s time.
There was a familiar ring to the Women’s results with Anna Burton of Bristol University coming home first in 18.55 (twenty-second overall). Behind her Michelle Kerfoot of Bitton Road Runners was Lady Runner-up and first F35. Sarah Everitt was third lady and first F45 (sorry Sarah) as she ducked under 20 minutes with a 19.55 clocking.
First V40 was Dean Naylor of Kingswood Triathlon Club in 17.44 and Dave Bedwell in eleventh place not only finished first V55 in 18.11 but also saw off all the V50s as well with Paul Dodd of Chepstow a V50 thirteenth in 18.23. Regular visitor from Gloucester Arthur Daley took the V60 race clocking 19.57.
As ever a big thank you to Chris Elson and his team of helpers for staging the event. Finally a special mention to Vanessa Anderton of Gloucester AC who was 112th in 33.38.
