Large Field at Pomphrey Sports 5k – Tuesday 30th October 2012

An influx of visitors from Fairwater Cwmbran Runners and a large contingent from both the host club (Bristol & West) and Bristol University saw 130 finishers in the Pomphrey Sports 5k held on a dry Tuesday night on 30th October 2012.

Youngsters from the club were to the fore as Will Christofi came home to win by 5 seconds from Harvey Speed of Coventry Godiva (15:44 to 15:49). In third place was Zac Tobias in 15.53 as first Junior. Behind in fourth place was Lionel Fernandez who found that running slightly faster than in September could not get him a podium finish. Fairwater Runners filled the next 3 places but with 3 in the first four the home club out-performed our Welsh visitors whose four in the first nine was commendable.

Jenny Jagger has been in excellent form and repeated her win from September but a 17:45 clocking was a lot slower – she attributed her time to going off too fast (apparently she clocked 5:12 for the first mile). Obviously her coach needs to have a word about pace judgement! Behind Jenny, Anna Burton of Bristol University (19:28) and Christine Lowson (19:52) finished second and third ladies respectively.

First M40 was Stefan Simms from Fairwater Runners in 17:03 with regular Jacob Hayes from Bitton runner-up in the category in 17:42. Malcolm White of Westbury Harriers was first M45 in 17.58 and Dave Bedwell was first M55 in 18:38.Arthur Daley, another regular, from Gloucester Athletic Club took first M60 in 20:06 ahead of Tony Jeffries (20:52).

In the mature ladies categories Sarah Everitt was first L45 in 20:03, finishing in front of Fiona Cramp of Bitton Road Runners who was the first L35 in 20:18. Helen Hinsley of Bitton Road Runners was second L45 in 20:55 and it was great to see Emma Bowers back racing and finishing second L35 in 21:27. First L55 was Sylvia Crump in 27:03 who was 30 seconds clear of Westbury Harrier’s Eithne Noonan.

The winning under-17s were Emma Jones of Westbury in 21:00 (Dad Peter might have been pacing her – or was it the other way around he was given 21:01) and the first under-17 was Daniel Binns from Bristol & West.

Once again our thanks go to Race Director Chris Elson, Roger Brocklesby (apparently Technical Director according to his hi-vis vest) and the rest of their team for another successful event.

Don’t forget the third race in this year’s Winter Series (and the final race this side of Christmas) will be held at Pomphrey Hill Sports Centre on Tuesday 26th November 2012 starting at 7.30 p.m. – as always entries on the night (unless you have already pre-entered for the series).
