The threatening clouds held off long enough for the first race of the 2012/2013 Pomphrey Hill Winter 5k series to be held in the dry. The home club’s Tom Morris took the early pace but had to succumb to a strong finish from Bristol & West new-comer Lionel Fernandez as the latter came home for the victory in 16:26. Behind him Tom ran 16:36 for the runners-up slot with Lionel’s friend and fellow Spanish athlete Nacho Ardisana taking third place in 16:54.
Hannah Alderson of Bristol & West was next home as first lady in 17:15 and was slightly disappointed not to have run sub-17 – a time that must have been on the cards following her 17.09 at Clevedon (which is generally acknowledged to be around 30 seconds long). Second lady home was Michelle Kerfoot of Bitton Road Runners in 19.06 with Aoife Kelly of Bristol & West third in 19.20.
Down the age groups Jacob Hayes of Bitton Road Runners was first M40 in 17.27, Jim Godden was first M50 in 18.23 – finishing in front of Malcolm White in 18.28 as Malcolm was first M45. Arthur Daley took first M60 in 21.00.
Michelle Kerfoot was first L35 (in second overall place in the ladies race) with Sally Curnow of Bitton Road Runners first L45 in 21.41. Sylvia Crump was first L55 finishing 76th overall in 27.09.
Race Director Chris Elson advised the runners that the course had been remeasured since the summer series and 40 metres had been added to ensure the course’s accuracy. There were 84 finishers – and the smaller than usual field was probably due to those athletes who are saving themselves for this coming Sunday’s Bristol Half-Marathon. Many thanks to Chris Elson, Roger Brocklesby and their band of loyal helpers for another excellent race. Put the date in your diaries for the second in this winter’s series on Tuesday 30th October 2012.
